Ahoy mateys! Jolly to see ye. It’s been a while. 'ave yer 'eard the story o' Nixes Mate?

No? Well, it’s a jolly one.

Some say one of Captain Nixe’s mates turned on him somewhere off Boston. When he failed, Captain Nix left him on the island. The mate claimed his innocence, and cursed the island before he died, claiming the island would disappear if he was innocent.

Turns out th’ island has been disappearin’... but whether or not t’do with th’ curse or wi’ years of walks takin’ gravel ‘tis not for me to say.

The July full moon, also known as the Buck Moon, occurs on July 21, at 6:17 a.m. EDT. The full moon shares the evening sky with Mercury, which will be at its greatest apparent distance from the sun that day. Moonset is at 5:29 a.m. that day in New York City, but farther south the moment of full phase occurs before then.

The name "Buck Moon" originates from Native American traditions, referring to the time of year when male deer, or bucks, begin to grow their new antlers.

On the night of the full moon, just after sunset (which is at 8:21 p.m. in New York), one will be able to see Mercury, which reaches its greatest eastern elongation — the maximum apparent distance from the sun — at 11:37 p.m. EDT. The planet sets at 9:34 p.m., so it won't be very high in the sky; it will only be 5 degrees above the western horizon by 9 p.m. But careful observations after sunset might allow you to see it before then. Do not try to use any optical aid to see it until the sun is below the horizon, however; observing any objects close to the sun is dangerous because even split-second exposure to sunlight through binoculars or a telephoto lens can cause permanent damage to your retinas.

Happy Moon and Planet gazing and don’t forget to check out our guided Full Moon adventures: https://thetrustees.org/program/full-moon-adventures/

In July 1891 four women took off on an adventure to Great Brewster Island. The women, all from Lowell, spent nearly two weeks on the island. To pass the time, they read, cooked, met with island locals, and watched sunsets. In their collective journal of the trip, they expressed their feelings about leaving the island and recounted the joy of their time there:

“We leave behind us the uneventful, idyllic days, like no others in our lives, with their placid serenity, their pleasant spice of labor, the unruffled happiness of accustomed comradeship and all the glory of sea and sky….”

Join us on March 20 at 6:30pm for a talk about the “The Great Brewster Journal” with author Stephanie Schorow and researchers from the Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands to learn more about the women behind this Boston Harbor adventure.

Before mariners developed tried-and-true navigation techniques, sailing the seas involved a lot of guesswork.
