Who needs the Great Minnesota State fair, when we have our own rollercoaster...right here at Harmony Hill!
Two days ago our 1st fall cria came. She is an adorable girl of striking black color. We noticed our girl, Penny, was laboring while we were cleaning the barn. We were happy that she had delivered so smoothly or so we thought…
We shuffled Penny and cria into the barn to do all the after delivery farm stuff like nursing, getting the legs under the cria, ect, but Penny still seemed to be laboring. Well, that was a new one for us but we knew (after this many years farming) to always expect the unexpected. A quick call to our vet and shortly after the vet's arrival we discovered Penny had a breech baby. Wait..what?! Twins and one was breech! Ok, that was a new one for us. Sadly, after much effort the breech cria did not make it. Enter Kiana the day after Penny's "twin" delivery. Humming away, very attentive to the new cria, very sweet. We of course assumed she was just being a sweet hormonal expecting mom...ah, NOPE! Kiana had quietly given birth to that beautiful black cria the day before that we all thought was Penny's.
So here we are trying to transition the new black beauty to Kiana (who has an abundance of milk ready for her) but so far no such luck. At this point we are just going to keep Penny, Kiana, and the cria together. Both Kiana and Penny seem quite content to co-parent together. The cria is very happy to have two attentive moms with lots of good eats for her. Everyone wins!
What a interesting, odd, magical rollercoaster this fall cria season has begun with! Remember to come out to Harmomy Hill Saturday, September 28th and Sunday, September 29th 10am until 5pm to see what else can happen on the farm within that time.
