The animals that aren't hibernating are in their full winter fluff! Here we have a couple of coyotes and a couple of red foxes. In photo 3, we watched the fox listen and pounce while hunting for about 15 minutes!

Home on the range, Yellowstone's northern range that is! Looks like the animals living on North America's Serengeti (Lamar Valley) will have some peace and quiet from all of us visitors to the park for a little while.

The good news is that even with portions of Yellowstone closed, there are still Amazing recreational opportunities open for everyone (starting TOMORROW)!

It's the season of new growth in Yellowstone. Here's one healthy bull elk with velvet covered antlers!

Here is my favorite action shot of one of Yellowstone's .

A sulfur/steam bubble rises through the mudpot, shooting some mud into the air. Sometimes the mud will jump 10+ feet.

A high concentration of sulfur in these springs leads to an accumulation of sulfuric acid which turns the rocks and gravel into very fine clay that mixes with water, creating the mud pot.

In the springtime when the water table is high, the mud pots are quite "soupy". Throughout the summer they will thicken up into a more stew-like consistency!

North American Bison - these animals are a symbol of conservation success. 30 to 60 million bison once roamed across North America; that population was reduced to as low as 550 individual bison at the start of the 20th century. Today, around 30,000 bison live in herds on public and private land with many more being raised as livestock, Yellowstone is home to about, 5000 bison.

A member of Yellowstone's Junction Butte pack making the early morning rounds. We were lucky enough to spot this wolf while on the trails last spring (from a safe and legal distance - at least 100 yards)!

Fountain Geyser 6/19/21

Had a great day in the park, witnessed a bear chase chase and capture an elk calf, saw a wolf during our picnic and watched the fountain geyser erupt! More photos coming soon!

The history of the American Bison aka aka is tragic yet inspiring. An estimated population of 40 million bison that once across North America was decimated to nearly just 500 individuals. initiatives have saved this species from extinction and there are now herds throughout North America. In , we typically see many each time we visit and its easy to take their presence for granted. Next time you see one of these gentle (also huge and wild) mammals, take a moment to appreciate the story of these animals that have lived in North America nearly 20 times as long as humans have!
