The Mollie's Pack has their home territory in Pelican Valley, where they amazingly and successfully prey on bison.
They are named after Mollie Beattie, who was the first female Director of the US Fish and Wildlife Service and helped with the wolf reintroduction in Yellowstone in 1995.

These sweet little puff balls are uinta ground squirrels. Because they don't have a bushy tail (it's short and stumpy instead) normally associated with squirrels, they are commonly misidentified as prairie dogs.
They are found darting all over the park (another reason to drive slow!!) throughout the spring and summer. And are commonly seen with their mouths jammed full of grass, stocking up for the winter.
Uinta ground squirrels hibernate underground from mid-July to March. However, sometimes they are active during the winter near Mammoth Hot Springs. This is thought to occur because the ground is hydrothermally heated, and can arouse them from hibernation.

The long-tailed weasel can be found in various regions of Yellowstone. And yes, it does, indeed, have have a long tail. It's tail is almost half the length of it's head and body combined.
In the winter, the long-tailed weasel's fur turns completely white, allowing it to blend in with the snow.

These teepees can be seen through this evening in Gardiner Montana, just outside the northern entrance of Yellowstone.
At night, they are lit in an assortment of colors: "Lighting of the Teepees in Yellowstone Park are symbols of a legacy and vision of my ancestors which is an inclusion of welcoming, belonging and building of relationships where mutual respect and honor is practiced and encouraged by all the nations and races throughout the world." (William Snell Jr., President of Pretty Shield Foundation)

Nothing beats waking up in the wilderness.
The birds are chirping, the elks bugling, a thick layer of fog covers the ground, the coffee is brewing, and you have the whole day to explore.

Thanks for the review Rosie!

"From the expertise of landscape, to the dad jokes, to the phenomenal food that included fresh veggies and lots of flavor, Nomadic by Nature is truly the pinnacle and standard of customer service and satisfaction in the back country. Matt and Emily were gracious with the pace and kept our group of 7 together and entertained. Our trip into the Black Canyon of the Yellowstone was marbled with wildlife sightings including badgers and bears, magnificent wild flower blooms, and rain that made everything all that much more green."

Almost two years ago, Nomadic by Nature donated a backpacking trip to a nonprofit in Bozeman called Thrive for their annual Lily Ball. The trip was scheduled for June 2022, and five days before we were going to head out, the Yellowstone River experienced that historic flood and the park shut down.
Finally, after almost two years, we were able to set out on our backpacking trip to Buffalo Plateau. This group was so fun to be around, crushed big miles and elevation and was the first Nomadic by Nature trip to make it all the way up Buffalo Plateau. Plus, they were so gracious to donate over $3,000 to support and all that they do for our community!

Did you know that sandhill cranes are among the oldest living birds in the world?
They have the oldest known fossil record of any bird that is still living. In the 1920’s, a 10 million year old crane fossil, thought to be a sandhill crane ancestor, was unearthed in Nebraska. And in Florida, a modern and unequivocal sandhill crane fossil was found to be 2.5 million years old.

Join us on a Slough Creek backpacking trip at the end of the month. This is one of our favorite spots in Yellowstone, and is the best intro to backpacking! We will hike into the meadow that Slough Creek meanders though, set up a basecamp for two nights and explore the area. There will be opportunities for fishing, relaxing by the creek and day hiking to the park boundaries. Come see what makes this one of the best kept secrets of the backcountry.
