Having been given a 30% chance of surviving cancer beyond two years, Randy Henninger had surgery to remove the lower part of his colon and re**um, resulting in a permanent colostomy. This led to his new perspective on life.

"After surgery, I realized that everything I thought was important, like climbing the corporate ladder or getting that new car, really wasn't. I started to focus more on my family and helping others.”

26 years later post-surgery, Randy has pursued a love of the outdoors - regularly enjoying mountain climbing, scuba diving and surfing. In that time, he's even climbed the tallest mountain in the continental U.S, Mount Whitney (14,495 feet) ... twice.

Randy also turned his love of surfing with his sons, Jeff and Josh, into a way of helping others - becoming a part-time surfing instructor and teaming up with the Wounded Warrior Program at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, to help service members overcome their own challenges.

"I stand for hope. Even when the odds are a million to one, I tell people that they can be that one, but it's up to them to fight. It's the battle for your life and no-one has more at stake than you.”

While sick before her ileostomy operation, Sarah Biggart had to give up being a vegetarian because she couldn't handle raw fruits and veggies.

After recovering from surgery, she discovered that, in her words, she could eat 'most anything'. Here's what she learned along the way*.

"I have mentioned time after time that I love to live an active and on the go lifestyle with an ostomy, and this has continued as long as my health permits! What this means is that I have to continue to use products that I can rely on so I don’t have to pause my life to worry about my ostomy bag (even though this can happen from time to time).

At age 37, Jeff Kleman was in great shape. Considered an elite athlete, he regularly entered triathlons, marathons and had biked 100 mile+ trips.

But after an adventure race, Jeff noticed a small amount of blood in his urine. Despite advice that this wasn't uncommon for athletes who had pushed their bodies hard, Jeff's wife wasn't convinced. Having visited a urologist, it was confirmed that he had bladder cancer.

“I was healthier than 99% of the people I know. This will be my next challenge; I'm just gonna add 'cancer survivor' to my list of accomplishments.”

For an endurance athlete, what followed would prove a real test. Jeff's cancer would return three times and, in the process his bladder would become so damaged that it would have to be removed.

“I just wanted my life back. Losing my bladder had to be better than my current situation.”

After the removal of his bladder, his recovery started.

“I ate better, walked regularly and focused on finding my ‘new normal,’” Jeff says. “Biking and running came back into my life. I returned to the basketball court and started lifting weights again. The life I had known was coming back. Slowly, I conquered each challenge: sleeping on all sides, swimming and picking up my children. The fear of leaks and problems faded.”

Today, with his year-long recovery now behind him, Jeff is back at normal weight, speed and strength and looking forward to a bright future.

Ulcerative colitis, in her words, 'ruled over' Phyllis Rovner's life for over two decades.

A series of doctors had told Phyllis that her colon would have to come out but, unable to deal with the thought of having a stoma bag on her belly, she refused.

However, after work stress aggravated her colitis, Phyllis required four blood transfusions. She realized that it was time for surgery.

"It was a blessing in disguise for two reasons. Not only did surgery rescue me from a life of chronic pain associated with ulcerative colitis, but the surgeon discovered severe dysplasia, which would have likely led to colon cancer. This was the turning point in my life.”

Far from her stoma keeping her indoors, Phyllis found that she never stayed indoors for long - "Once I no longer had to worry about finding a bathroom because of my ulcerative colitis, I was free!”

She now credits her ostomy for giving her the opportunity to travel the world - from South Africa, Swaziland, Madagascar, Costa Rica, Ecuador to Thailand and Australia - doing everything from camping, to snorkeling and going on safari.

Curious about having a massage with an ostomy? Here's how Meghan (@emc_brown)'s first massage went: "There were so many things I was curious if I could do after having surgery, one of those being if I could get a massage! As a new ostomate, it seemed questionable at the time because I was concerned about laying on my stomach while my bag filled up, and I worried about there being too much pressure or pushing on my back opposite of my stoma. The good news is that YES! You can get a massage with an ostomy, and here are a few tips to make it that much easier: ☀️ Be mindful of how much you’re eating before your massage appointment. I will usually have a light breakfast in the morning before an appointment but don’t want to eat too much in order to prevent my bag from filling up while laying on my stomach. ☀️ Change your bag before your appointment! I like to do this just to ensure that I have the best seal possible. I love and regularly wear @convatecus moldable wafers because they are gentle on my skin, get the best fit around my stoma, and turtleneck when moisture hits to best prevent leaks (not to mention I always get the best wafer seal!) ☀️ Talk to your massage therapist beforehand. If you have any concerns, let them know! As a rule of thumb, I always tell them I have an ostomy just so they are aware of my abdomen and conscientious of positioning. ☀️ Wear what makes you comfortable.
