Raphoe Castle, County Donegal
Raphoe Castle is a 17th-century castle ruin located beside the village of Raphoe in County Donegal. The castle is also known as Bishop's Palace because it belonged to the Rev. Dr. John Leslie, the Church of Ireland Bishop of Raphoe. The castle was attacked during the Irish Rebellion of 1641, was later laid siege during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland around 1650, and was damaged again by supporters of King James II and VII in 1689 during the Williamite War. The United Irishmen attacked the castle in 1798 and in 1838, it was destroyed in an accidental fire. Such was the fate of Raphoe Castle, like so many other castle ruins across Ireland.

Slieve Gullion Walk
Today, August 1st marks the beginning of the harvest season, which in ancient Ireland was known as Lughnasa. The festival, named after the god Lugh, involved ceremonies, ritual athletic contests, feasting, matchmaking, and trading. It was practiced all over Ireland but perhaps it has the strongest association with an area in County Armagh called Slieve Gullion. It was here that the Irish mythological hero Cuchulainn was born as Setanta to the Irish god Lugh, which the festival is named after. Indeed, this area of Armagh was a fitting place for such celebrations as it is believed to have been one of the great royal sites of Gaelic Ireland. If you visit Armagh, be sure to tour this beautiful part of the country, and don’t forget to stop at the Navan Centre and Fort, where you can imagine yourself as an ancient Gaelic warrior.
