Despite their name, French fries are believed to have originated in Belgium, not France. According to Belgian lore, villagers in the Meuse Valley were fond of frying small fish. During the winter when the river froze and fishing was impossible, they began frying strips of potatoes instead. American soldiers stationed in Belgium during World War I encountered these fried delights and, since the dominant language in southern Belgium is French, they nicknamed them "French fries." This misattribution stuck, and the term "French fries" became widely accepted in the United States and beyond.
