THE MUST-HAVE SUMMER TRAVEL VIRTUE: PATIENCE
From the Points Guy: and experienced by many clients and myself!
I should be writing this newsletter to you from my home in Boston where I would have arrived late Thursday afternoon from New Yorkβs LaGuardia Airport, had everything gone to plan. Alas, here I am approaching the Connecticut-Rhode Island border on the Acela one day after my scheduled departure because the Northeast was a total operational meltdown for airlines yesterday, with more than a third of flights at LaGuardia getting cancelled, per FlightAware, and hundreds of cancellations at airports from Washington, D.C., up to Boston.
We have said it before, I am saying it now and weβll say it many more times: The summer of sky-high prices and limited availability is here, and travelers should probably view departure times as mere suggestions at this point. Arrive at the airport early (really early, if you donβt have Clear or TSA PreCheck), rely on mobile apps to stay up to date on delays and potential rebooking options, and buy travel insurance for when airlines, hotels or cruises fall well short of how you think they should be handling a matter.
Given the lack of communication to everyone from travelers like myself to staffers who appeared to be told little by those above them (airline employees, we salute you β your jobs were particularly brutal yesterday), it was time to look beyond the Big Apple. The hefty volume of canceled flights out of New York meant rental cars, buses, trains, alternate flights and more were sold out yesterday and into today. I managed to snag a last-available seat in Stamford, Connecticut, early this morning after scoring a pretty cheap room with points at the Marriott across the street, but many others weren't so lucky.
Moral of the story? Pack plenty of flexibility and patience, my friends. Youβll need a lot of both to survive the next few months in the friendly (albeit unreliable) skies.
