On October 11, 2024, the Rayonier Paper Mill caught afire in Jesup (Wayne County), GA without an alert to the residents impacted by this catastrophe. We continue to witness and experience chemical horror throughout the State of Georgia!

Nothing Can Comp(AIR): Conversations from the Coast to the Capitol is a virtual event with the goal of collecting accounts across our region using the StoryCorps mobile app to be archive in the Library of Congress. On Monday, October 7, 2024- Heritage Works, Inc. submitted a letter of support in solidarity with the City of Conyers, GA (Rockdale County) and its surrounding areas who were greatly impacted by the BioLab Explosion. On September 29, 2024-men, women, and children were forced to breathe in the chlorine-filled air which emitted from a plume caused from an unexpected explosion at the BioLab facility. This would be the fourth incident at the BioLab facility.

💥This catastrophic event serves as another testament to the environmental injustice that plagues the State of Georgia and its 159 counties. The presence of businesses and entities that terrorize Black, Brown, Indigenous, and underserved low-earning communities through air, water, and soil are menaces to our livelihoods as a whole.

💥As Founder & Executive Director of Heritage Works, Inc., it is with a heavy heart to relay that we on the Georgia Coast cannot only relate but empathize with the collective communities who are suffering at this time. Seventeen months after the April 13, 2023 Pinova/Hercules Explosion in Brunswick, GA- we watch in horror as we remember our plume that wafted in the air without proper information from our local government for nearly 8 hours.

💥We DEMAND that our local, state, and federal governments eradicate the presence of these hazardous death chambers in our communities!

⚡️Georgia peeps, LISTEN UP: If you are a Georgia Power customer, your rates are subject to increase up to 3x soon! The Public Service Commission (PSC) which is the deciding body for how Georgia Power generates electricity, how much their customers pay for service, and how much Georgia Power profit-- is taking public comments on using biomass in the State of Georgia 😳

⚡️On 9/17, the Georgia Public Service Commission will vote on whether to let Georgia Power burn wood pellets for energy. This decision could lead to inefficient, dirty energy that pollutes our communities and raises customer bills.

⚡️We need to act now! Visit bit.ly/notothehike and tell them 'No' to wood pellet biomass and higher energy costs. The docket number is 44880.

Let’s protect our air and our wallets

⚡️ Biomass or bioenergy are materials used to produce energy that comes from living things. In this immediate matter trees are being cut down (deforestation) to create wood pellets to be burned and used to produce electricity . Georgia Power is currently proposing to build a biomass plant in Jesup, Georgia which will produce 70 of the 80 Megawatts (MW) of biomass energy planned to be generated!

⚡️Biomass plants emit hazardous material into the atmosphere and will be placed in the most vulnerable communities in the state. These volatile air compounds can cause asthma, cardiovascular arrest and other conditions!

⚡️We are teaming up as a coastal community coalition to help raise awareness about the dangers of biomass in our state and encouraging our family, friends, partners and followers to submit a PUBLIC COMMENT to the Public Service Commission on or before September 16th! We have the link in our bio!

To learn more about the PSC, HB 1312, biomass energy, and/or how your energy bill will be impacted- scan the QR Code on the flyer!

Don’t be robbed by the word JOB!

Though one’s individual life has its own path, the word UBUNTU resounds loudly in all its many directions. The phrase, I am because you are, solidifies the notion that we are all a part of the whole instead of apart from it. This sentiment rings more true during time exploration or what is known as historic tours. The Georgia Coast serves as a portal through time from our sandy shore beaches to our unmovable tabby buildings and everything in between.

These elements add to the mood and energy of the season, causing one to realize that there are many things that can make one time travel to a beloved memory. On Wednesday evening, the Huston House on historic Butler Island caught afire. Butler Island was a former rice plantation from 1744- 1822 once owned by Major Pierce Butler. This island was the dwelling place of some of those enslaved by Butler and was later a part of the largest auctions of enslaved people in the state of Georgia now known as the Weeping Times.

In 2020, the descendants of Butler Island worked together with other organizations to eliminate HB 906 which threatened to use this sacred land for a distillery with success.

We stand in solidarity with the Butler Island Coalition in this time of loss. We shall use our social media platforms as a source of updates for those interested in assisting the coalition’s mission.

What a great privilege to be in attendance for the unveiling of the Tunis Campbell historic marker in Darien, GA last week. Senator and Reverend Tunis Campbell was the highest-ranking and most influential African-American in the 19th Century. Born a freedman in Middlebrook, NJ- was an abolitionist, clergyman, and political leader who actively participated in the Colored Convention Movement and helped to establish the Freedman's Bureau. Campbell was appointed to supervise land claims and resettlement on five Georgia islands: Delaware, Colonels, Ossabaw, St. Catherines, and Sapelo.
