⛏️ Rock on! Our annual Geology Festival returns July 12-13.

Join park rangers and special guests for two days of guided hikes, geology talks, evening programs, and family-friendly activities.

This year's festival will feature two special keynote speakers:

🎤 Cate Larsen is a geology communicator from New York state known on social media as the Groovy Geologist. Her Friday talk will focus on how geologists study the rock record to interpret what happened long ago, and how doing so helps us understand the natural processes happening today.

🎤 Tyler Knudsen is a Senior Geologist with the Utah Geological Survey’s Geologic Hazards Program in Cedar City, Utah. On Saturday he'll share his work of identifying, investigating, and publishing information on hazardous faults, landslides, rockfalls, ground subsidence, and other potential geologic hazards in southwestern Utah. He has authored and co-authored several studies and maps on the geology and geologic hazards of the Cedar City-Parowan area, St. George basin, Zion National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and Bryce Canyon National Park.

Nothing but facts!

🌕 The moon is full tonight, and soon our parking lots may be too!

Memorial Day weekend is historically the park's busiest weekend of the year. If you'll be visiting in the coming days, here are a few ways you can be prepared:

🚗 Parking lots tend to fill early. Avoid the uncertainty and enjoy a predictable visit on the free Bryce Canyon Shuttle. We recommend boarding in Bryce Canyon City at the Shuttle Station. go.nps.gov/BryceShuttle

🚴 The Shared Use Bike Path is another way to skip the lines and visit the iconic Bryce Amphitheater. Bikes and e-Bikes can be rented both within and outside the park. go.nps.gov/SharedUsePath

⚠️ Should all parking lots within the park reach capacity, private vehicles will be temporarily restricted from entering the park. This typically happens at least once each Memorial Day weekend. Riding the shuttle or using the Shared-Use Path are the only ways to enter the park during these restrictions.

Here’s a shout out and thank you to all of the wonderful park employees that help make your visit the magical experience it is! So thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

They say parks are for people. The thing is, you need quite a few people to help make parks...for people.

You get what we mean. Whether it's greeting you at the entrance station, helping you choose a hike, bandaging a scraped knee, cleaning the restrooms, keeping the internet on, teaching you what kinds of rocks we have, or making sure we have enough money to pay for everything, Bryce Canyon employees show up every day to care for you and your public lands.

All of these roles (and plenty others) are the "service" reflected in our name: National Park Service. This Public Service Recognition Week, we want to thank our staff and fellow rangers for everything they do to make Bryce Canyon National Park a place where the world is welcome.

Burrow on over to Bryce Canyon for Utah Prairie Dog Day!

Utah Prairie Dog Day will return on Thursday, May 9 and feature ranger-led prairie dog viewing, family-friendly activity booths and a special keynote presentation by David Eads, an ecologist with the U.S. Geologic Survey. The event is free with park admission. For a detailed schedule, please visit go.nps.gov/UtahPrairieDogDay

To help promote the event, the park held an art contest open to students in Garfield, Wayne, and Kane counties. The park received artwork submissions from students depicting the Utah prairie dog in its native environment. All artwork submissions will be on display at the Visitor Center on May 9. Artwork by Naomi Milby, a 5th grader from Panguitch, is featured on this year's poster.

A year-round inhabitant of Bryce Canyon’s high plateau meadows, Utah prairie dogs are considered a "keystone species" as they serve a variety of important functions including aerating soil and promoting plant growth. Over 200 other species have been associated with prairie dog colonies, including wildlife that depend upon prairie dog activity for both food and habitat. The Utah prairie dog has been listed under the Endangered Species Act since 1973 and was successfully reintroduced to the park in the 1980s.

More information on the Utah Prairie Dog can be found online at go.nps.gov/UtahPrairieDog

A few things to consider this upcoming weekend!

A few things to consider this upcoming weekend!

🌱🚘❄️Now this is what it's like when worlds collide!

Increased Spring visitation and high-elevation Winter weather have a way of coming together in late March. Shuttle service does not begin until April 5, so options are limited once parking lots are full.

Forecasts currently predict 1 - 3 inches of snow for Bryce Canyon this weekend, which may lead to a temporary closure of Miles 4 - 18 of the Main Road.

Here are a few tips for your Easter weekend visit:

🕖 Time your visit well. Visitation peaks from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

🚙 In a multi-vehicle group? Consider parking at the shuttle station in Bryce Canyon City and carpooling into the park.

🥾 You came here to hike, right? Park at the Visitor Center Additional Parking lot and walk the freshly-plowed Shared-Use Path 0.8 miles to Sunrise Point.

🅿️ Only park in designated parking spots to protect vegetation along roadsides and avoid possible citations or towing.

🚧 Be prepared for short-term parking lot closures this weekend. These typically lift after about 30 minutes. In rare cases, vehicle entry into the park may be temporarily restricted until space becomes available.

Are you ready to go? As always, you can stay up to date with park alerts and conditions at go.nps.gov/BryceConditions

🎶 I looked up at a burning ring of fire; it was bright, bright, bright, so glasses were required… 🎶

What better way to celebrate 100 years of Bryce Canyon wonder than with a centennial solar eclipse? Come join us for a very special alignment of the sun, the moon, and you on Saturday, October 14.

Annular eclipses occur when the moon is at or near its furthest point from Earth, resulting in a “ring of fire” effect, rather than a total solar eclipse (also requiring viewers to keep their solar viewing glasses on the whole time).

We expect this celestial event to be not only sublime but very popular, so be sure to visit our eclipse page to help you plan your visit: go.nps.gov/BryceEclipse

You can also pick up a copy of this special eclipse poster designed by Tyler Nordgren at the Visitor Center bookstore or online at https://shop.brycecanyon.org/product-p/1788.htm
