Our hearts are with our neighbors across the North Carolina mountains. Hurricane Helene has devastated the region, and for the time being all areas of western NC should be considered closed to visitors. We hope to be able to welcome guests back very soon to our neck of the woods. Until then, please consider donating to help emergency relief efforts across western NC.

There is a massive effort underway to get help to the people of western North Carolina including state and federal relief but we know there will be additional needs. If you would like to donate to the NC Disaster Relief Fund, visit nc.gov/donate

Glad to be on the hills above the beautiful Fontana Lake, stretching from the Fontana Dam almost 20 miles west all the way to our neck of the woods. Have you been to see this modern marvel?

On November 7, 1944, water impoundment began at Fontana Dam in western North Carolina. At 480 feet, Fontana Dam is the highest dam east of the Rocky Mountains. Like other TVA projects, it was constructed for flood regulation, regional power and economic development. Electricity generated by the dam was also used to power Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where research on development of the atomic bomb was underway.

Several communities were covered under 10,600-acre Fontana Lake. Forty cemeteries and 2,043 known graves were relocated. At the peak of construction more than 6,000 workers worked shifts around the clock. In 1947, the workers’ village was converted into the present-day resort community of Fontana Village.

The concrete dam, which is 376 feet wide at its base, and the accompanying six-story glass-walled powerhouse at its foot, cost about $74,681,000. Every five years, the lake’s waters are drawn down for dam inspection, and during these times the remnants of earlier times can be seen.

Here is our new Forno Venetzia Pizza oven and have to say it was amazing to cook on. The oven was easy to fire up and maintain the temperature. We were very impressed and happy we made the choice to add this to the cabin. Guaranteed to create a lot of great memories.

Among the numerous new kitchen additions at the cabin are an All-Clad Metalcrafters waffle iron and a KitchenAid stand mixer -- perfect for making a batch of luscious Liège waffles. Fresh lemon curd, berry compote, and chantilly cream, if you're feeling extra indulgent!

Fall renovations are underway! Here's just a first glance at what is to come -- a new propane fire table with beautiful adirondack chairs from NC based Polywood furniture on a freshly power washed deck. We chose POLYWOOD because they're made in NC and make beautiful and comfortable outdoor furniture from recycled plastics, saving the planet one chair at a time.

Starting in early October, the cabin upgrades Round 2 will begin. We are very excited to unbox and try this one. Growing up, one of our favorite memories was when we made ice cream as a family. The old fashioned ice barrel type are fun, but we aren't sure you'll want to drive down the mountain just for ice. We decided to stock the cabin with the very user-friendly Breville Ice Cream Compressor. It makes it all -- from frozen yogurt to ice cream. Just load your mix and hit Start. It’s one of those kitchen machines that is a game changer on vacation but takes up too much room at home.
