may be working/traveling during your visit but we're always available via phone. HISTORY:
Stephan & friends built every stitch of our cabin by hand 12 years ago with the intention of having a place of community where friends, family & travelers could stay short or long-term and help care-take. We’ve realized this dream recently (with the help of AirBnB!) and are ecstatic to offer our little cabin to fellow adventurers. You’ll notice red cedar board & batten on the exterior with knotty pine wainscoting throughout the interior rooms. A home is never finished ;), so we’re always doing little projects here and there to improve. Our cabin is unique, that’s the beauty of AirBnB...it allows travelers to experience life in different places in the comfort of a real home. Therefore, you may experience daily living tasks that are different from your own {like composting :) }, don’t hesitate to ask questions if you can’t find things or don’t know how to do something. We’ve tried to be accommodating by clearly labeling everything and posting signage to make your experience as smooth as possible. ABOUT US:
We’re Nicole, Stephan & Crystal (the cat). We are fellow adventurers, naturalists, outdoor educators & plant geeks. We are originally from Austin, TX, Odessa, FL and the barn next door, respectively. Stephan teaches wilderness emergency medicine, swift water rescue and trains raft guides for Nantahala Outdoor Center (this is his 21st season!). Nicole teaches primitive living/wilderness survival skills for the outdoor leadership/wilderness therapy program at our local community college. We both teach edible, medicinal & useful plant ID and we own a small native plant education & landscape design company. We love to travel & explore nature and want to share our home so that others can do the same! Crystal, our orange tabby (a.k.a. Spotted-Gums-Murphy, a.k.a. Screechy Smurf, a.k.a. Llama de la Selva) teaches the art of relaxing, screeching & napping. We live in the upper level of the cabin and we may be working during the day & home at night or traveling during your stay, but we’re always available via call/text should you have any questions! We’ll do our best to greet you when you arrive or in the morning if our timing coincides well. Please make yourself feel at home! Everything you see in the lower level is for guests to use. Please make sure if you use something, you put it back where it goes. CONSERVATION:
We appreciate your efforts to conserve energy & resources by turning off lights/appliances as often as possible and using the compost/recycling stations! We’re new to AirBnB as of 2016 and we’re always looking for ways to improve your stay and make you feel at home. We appreciate your feedback! Cheers! HOUSE RULES:

QUIRKS OF THE CABIN:
Verizon cell reception is usually good here (it’s what we have, & rarely have a problem unless there's a storm), other companies may not work as well
When the hot water is in use, you'll hear a ticking sound for a short time (it's the pipes expanding), nothing to worry about :)
The central living area ceilng light/fan is operated by pull cords only, there is no wall switch for this light/fan
We have some lights on automatic timers, so if you arrive after dark, you'll be able to see. Feel free to change the timers to suit your needs. We live in the upper level, so you’ll probably hear some normal sounds of living. We try to be as quiet as possible during your stay! If you hear a screechy meow, that’s our orange tabby cat named Crystal. She may come say hi to you, she's cute, but she isn't allowed inside. Our cabin is surrounded by forested areas that are home to wild critters. We suggest you don't leave anything outside overnight. We do live in the woods, therefore you will get the occasional bug that sneaks into the cabin. Please feel free to put it outside or vacuum it up! We don’t currently have a central kitchenette sink *yet*, so water comes from the bathroom sinks, like a hotel room. We’ve had our water tested and are told it’s some of the cleanest water in the U.S.! CLEANING:
We only use non-toxic, biodegradable soaps & cleaning products to protect our beautiful Appalachian ecosystem, and our guests’ health! We know traveling can be stressful, especially on your immune system, which is why we disinfect all surfaces after every guest stay! LANDSCAPE:
We own a native plant education/identification/consultation/landscape design company and teach edible, medicinal, useful & toxic plants for various entities. Our property is home to hundreds of indigenous Southern Appalachian species! Like most business owners, we’re concentrating on other’s properties & our own landscape is always a work in progress :) You’ll notice landscaping projects in the front & back

We spied this ruby-throated hummingbird nest in the red oak tree above the parking area yesterday!
This lady hummer sits on her nest 55 minutes out of every hour of the day for two weeks!
Her architectural skills are obvious as she uses living, breathing lichens for the structure (anti-microbial, traps moisture & nutrients, good insulation) and spider webs to bind it all together! (check out the nest close-up!!!)
The nest is maybe an inch wide and the babies will be 2 centimeters long when they hatch!
