We have so much to be thankful for, especially the great outdoors. Not only are these beautiful mountains the highest peaks east of the Rockies, they are also quite possibly the oldest mountains in the world. The continental collisions that created the Appalachian Mountains took place 290 to 500 million years ago, making them at least ten times older than the Andes, the Sierras, and the Rockies. The subsequent millions of years of erosion have given the Appalachians their soft, rounded appearance.
The Pinnacle Trail featured in this #reel can be accessed from the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 355.3. When traveling north, you will see a gated dirt road on the right side. Park near the gate. The orange blazed Pinnacle Trail makes for a short but steep out-and-back hike with a vertical climb of nearly 500 feet. Or, connect to the Old Mitchell Toll Road for a moderate to difficult 1.5 mile loop trail. Although the Pinnacle Trail requires some steep scrambling over roots and rocks, the spectacular views at the pinnacle are worth the effort.
Please remember to leave no trace and do your part to protect our natural world. Happy Thanksgiving!
