It’s definitely springtime in North Carolina. One of my customers captured a great video of baby woodies leaving one of my nest boxes.

One of my biggest sellers, my Barred owl nest box.
Barred owls are beautiful and abundant and will take readily to nest boxes. The best location for this nest box would be in a forested area with nearby wet/ low land or marshy areas. Box should be placed at a height of 12 to 20 feet in an open area facing away from prevailing weather patterns. Unobstructed flight path to the nest box is also recommend.

Im now getting regular pics of this barred owl. It’s unlikely I will have a nesting pair this year as that window has probably passed. That said this is a perfect spot for Mr barred owl to ambush unexpected prey. I’m hopeful the box will be occupied by this owl and it’s mate next season.

Once the hen starts incubating her clutch, the frequency of visits by the drake become very rare. This particular nesting clutch is now entering the incubation stage, probably won’t be seeing much more of this guy.

Mama woodie taking advantage of her landing perch. Many experts don’t recommend a perch as they believe it helps predators enter the box. If a raccoon makes it to the box I assure you the absence of a perch is not going to stop him.

Interesting photos, notice the crow behind the woodies. One minute after the wood ducks flew off Mr crow dropped down to investigate. Fortunately the nest was un disturbed.

Mama woodie coming in to lay her daily egg and then out. This gets repeated once every morning until all eggs are laid. She will lay 16 eggs (give or take a few) before the incubation period starts. Incubation last for 28 days minimum,up to 37 days.

Just finished installing a barred owl nest box. Barred owls like big timber forests with nearby low marshland areas. This location is perfect, lots of barred owl activity in this area. We shall see, fingers crossed.

It’s a beautiful day and all the birds are singing, even Oscar. He is generally pretty grouchy and doesn’t like to sing but today he cannot help it. If you can listen past the song birds and the mourning dove you can hear a happy singing Oscar.

Many people believe that nesting wood ducks need to be near water. Here is a pair of wood ducks actively searching for a nest site as filmed through our bedroom window. We do not have a pond or lake even close to us. After the ducklings hatch mrs woodie hen will take her ducklings to a suitable water source sometimes 1/2 mile away or more.

This week’s feature nest box is my robin/dove shelf. Both robins and doves prefer nesting on a platform. The preferred placement would be on the side of a building. Both species are very easy to attract. Woodducknestboxes.com
