Blast from the past...
It's time to travel back in time to 1982 in our latest !
Whether you were around Butte during this time or not, you probably know this as the year that the main pumps were turned off. This allowed Butte's underground metropolis to start slowly filling with water, as well as the famous Berkeley Pit.
There was concern and debate about this decision, and we now know the fate of it.
However, since 2019, water has been being treated from the Pit and discharged as part of an effort to control the rising water. There are even studies happening that might allow for necessary critical minerals, such as Rare Earth Elements and Zinc, to be pulled from the Pit's water!
To learn more, be sure to stop by the Berkeley Pit Viewing Stand!
