Once Leroy Lee had built the hand, he laid out plans to build the face. Joe Roberts had told him the most important thing about the face was it needed to be attractive. Lee designed a blueprint model for the face with a lot of the measurements from the model statue from Shirley Lochrie. Construction of the forehead proved much more difficult than he had imagined, but once it fell into place, the rest of the face followed. The process was helped when a rolling machine was donated to the project by Bearing Incorporated. This made shaping the features of the face much easier without having to hammer away for hours on end on one piece of metal.
In December 1983, the face was completed with some sandblasting and painting. It was placed in the equipment yard at Roberts Rocky Mountain Equipment on the afternoon of December 21, 1983. It stood 14 feet high and weighed 1500 pounds.
Vic Duran saw the face in the yard at a time when he was having some personal trouble. He approached Leroy Lee to see how he might help with the project. Vic had some minor experience welding and was willing to learn, so Lee was willing to teach him. "Throughout the winter, Leroy Lee, Ron Hughes, and Vic Duran spent their time welding the head section of the statue. Lee would draw chalk lines on the iron based on measurements from his grid plan. Ron Hughes would cut out the section, Leroy would tack it into place, then Duran or Hughes would weld the piece into place. The trio had developed the method down to clockwork. Unfortunately, in the spring of 1984, Ron Hughes got a job out of state which left the main welding and ironwork of the skin to Lee and Duran."
By the spring of 1984, the head and shoulder section of the statue was completed. It was sandblasted, sprayed with primer, and coated with a special wear-resistant white paint donated to th
