The Callicoon Depot now has free public Wi-Fi. In July, the Depot completed installation of a powerful new Wi-Fi Mesh network system. The new network provides approximately 7,500 square feet of wireless Internet coverage, complementing the access long provided by the Callicoon branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library. To access the Depot Wi-Fi, “DepotGuest”, scan the QR code or use the password, both of which are posted in the new bulletin board display case out front the Depot near the railroad crossing. Callicoon residents and visitors are welcome to sit at one of our new outdoor café tables or benches while browsing the web, making WiFi calls, working on homework or downloading school assignments. As progress continues on restoring this historic building and its grounds, we are pleased to become the newest hubspot at the center of our community.

The wasps are gone! Thank you Morgan O’Connor, amazing pest control expert, for coming to the rescue of the Callicoon Depot after wasps built a nest underneath the bench in front of our stage. Morgan was not only quick, but kind enough to donate his services so that Depot visitors don’t have to worry about getting a nasty sting in their you-know-whats. If anyone in the area needs pest control, shoot us a message and we’ll send you Morgan’s contact info. We highly recommend him!

Callicoon Depot, 1968. Fantastic photos taken by photographer Thomas J (TJ) Donahue back in the day. TJ was a signal station operator for the New York, New Haven and Hartford railroads during the 1950s and 60s who spent his time off traveling throughout the northeast in search of steam locomotives. TJ was in Callicoon in May of 1968 and photographed not only the Depot, but a locomotive and caboose that were tied down just east of the Depot. Note that in 1968, the Depot was painted red! At the time, the Erie Lackawanna Railroad was under control of its parent company, Dereco, who painted all its railroad buildings this same color, jokingly referred to by railroad history buffs as “the Dereco dip.” Behind the Depot, you can see the old A&P Store on Lower Main Street, today home to . Pic #2 shows the Erie Lackawanna locomotive, tied down alongside what is now . And Pic #3 is the caboose, behind which you can see the old Rexall Drug Store which used to be where is now located. Photos and info courtesy of , with credit due to the Western Connecticut Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society, which houses the TJ Donahue photo collection.
