On Wednesday morning, Nov. 6, 2024, the National Park Service restored access to approximately 11 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway, within the Asheville corridor, from milepost 382.5, at US 70 near the Folk Art Center, to milepost 393.6, at NC Route 191 near the NC Arboretum, including the French Broad Overlook at milepost 393.8.

The Asheville Visitor Center, at milepost 384, will now resume year-round operations daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Folk Art Center operations, at milepost 382, are scheduled to resume on Saturday, November 9. Trails in this section of the Parkway are also open but extreme caution is advised for trail users who may experience hazards resulting from landslides, downed or leaning trees, washouts, and other damage.

Visitors are also asked to avoid parking on the roadside in any location other than official, paved parking areas, as heavy equipment is still active in the area. Since storm recovery began, National Park Service staff and contractors have moved more than 350,000 cubic feet of storm debris from this 11-mile road segment. This volume of woody debris could fill nearly 150 shipping containers.

The National Park Service does not yet have projected opening dates for areas of the Parkway immediately north and south of the 11-mile road segment opening today. Ongoing roadway and roadside damage evaluations, significant debris removal, and miles of technical hazard tree work remain north of US 70 and south of State Route 191. The NPS will provide updates on those sections when additional information is available.

"With today’s opening, we have now restored access to over 310 miles of the Parkway.” Blue Ridge Parkway Superintendent Tracy Swartout said. “Incident teams and contractors have been working on this section for over a month, with large numbers of damaged trees, vast amounts of tree debris in the roadway, and heavy equipment at work simultaneously throughout the corridor. I am grateful for everyone involved in the effort to reopen this critical section of the Parkway.”

Due to the severity of the storm, conditions on park roads and trails are expected to continue to change in the next weeks and months. Visitors should plan carefully for their visit and share travel plans with others in advance. For safety reasons, the park asks that people continue to respect all closures. Current known conditions and updates about the Parkway are online at www.nps.gov/blri and the park’s social media platforms.

Glenn Acre cabins are back up. We have restored water, power and internet to the cabins.

We still have some road work to do, but luckily the upper entrance had very little damage, so to access the cabins you’ll use that entrance for the time being.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.

We hope to see you soon!

To all our family and friends out there…

As I’m sure you all know Western North Carolina experienced Biblical flooding like we’ve never seen before.

First and foremost. Larry and Gay are fine. Denise and Roger have been with them the entire time and they’re also fine.

We’ve had no power, running water, cell coverage or internet for many days. We did finally get electricity a couple of days ago and with that running water.

We managed to scrape by with food from our pantry and freezer that was no longer running. If you’ve been to our property before you’ve seen our small spring fed pond stocked with trout. The pond is now washed out along with the road to the HillTop and PineRidge Cabins.

The small stream that runs through our property turned into an angry river and then eventually over filled into two additional creek beds. The forest is full of rocks just across the road.

The four of us have been trying our best to fill in the large voids between the three culverts as well as open up culverts.

The large black one is now open, but the first one has about 6 feet of debris to be moved. Heavy equipment is needed, but due to fuel and just demand we’ve not even reached out to anyone thus far. Our current focus is the entrance that you first come across a small stream as that damn burst….wiping out the entrance. We’ve hauled load after load and it’s crossable at this point, but needs to gravel to make it better…again another item that we’ve not reached out for as of yet due to we know more people are in a bigger need.

It’s a struggle.

Thanks everyone that have reached out to check on us. Thanks for your prayers.

We will give out updates as things progress.

If anyone is in need of drinking water in our area and has water containers let us know. We have delicious spring water and would love to share.

When I was a kid my sister and I rode the LoserCruiser for a time….big yellow school bus in case you didn’t know.

One of the roads we went on was called Milksick Cove Road. I always thought that was an odd name and was told that cows would eat a w**d and then the milk would make you sick. …supposedly this cove was full of it and this the name.

What was the w**ds name?

Tawny Kitean? Nope
Still of the Night? Nope
Here I go again? Nope
Is this love? Nope

If you were an 80’s hard rocker I’m sure you guessed it by now…it’s called White Snake Root

White Snake Root has a toxin called Tremetol. If a cow eats enough of this w**d then the toxin can poison humans through the milk as well as meat.

There’s always something in bloom at Glenn Acres….come see us!
