The changing of the seasons means a change in the weather patterns on the Oregon Coast. Sometimes, winter weather, especially the ocean, can be fierce, and we have some information about how to safely observe the upcoming patterns we will be experiencing.
Upcoming seasonal weather patterns to take note of: King Tides 🌊
If you haven’t heard of King Tides before, they are the highest average tide height predictions of the year and usually correlate with a full or new moon. The gravitational pull of the moon and sun has a direct impact on the tides, causing King Tides in the winter months and minus tides in the summer months.
King Tides look different on each part of the Oregon Coast shoreline. In Cannon Beach, the King Tides sweep over the whole beach, making it extremely dangerous and often impossible to access for beachgoers. During the winter months, it’s best to wait for low tide to head down to the beach.
Best practices when the coast is experiencing King Tides:
- Check for tide and weather information to know what time high tide is
- Stay on the high, safe ground away from the waves
- Never turn your back to the ocean
- Stay away from logs and driftwood
- Be aware that sneaker waves can happen at anytime
Dates of King Tides are below:
November 15-17, 2024
*The King Tides prediction window has expanded from the 13th-18th.

Be sure to check weather advisories and heed any warnings before going down to the beach. We want to ensure everyone has a safe experience in Cannon Beach and on the Oregon Coast.
