Hey I am wondering if anyone would be interested in living in an Ice Castle at my place (I cover LP and electricity and shared access to house) in exchange for chores/projects around farm plus possible commission on rides/demos for the upcoming dogsledding season.

I don't have one yet, just seeing if there would be enough interest to make it worthwhile.

Hubby getting too old and I still have FT job, so some extra help would be handy. No room in house as we already have two other people in our co-op that have worked out great! This may be a good way to add another person to our team.

Chevy

Chevy is a special placement – I took this girl in as a rescue in the fall of 2021. I did not run her at all last season and we just worked through some trust issues over the past year. We started her in harness at wheel this season and man does she LOVE IT!!!! She is fast, she runs hard and her tug is tight all the time no matter how hard the pull is. However, even though she has made great progress in the past year, she still needs to be handled with caution which is just not a good fit for our kennel since we often have many different people harnessing and handling our dogs through our rides and programs. She is a very nicely built spayed Alaskan husky and only 3YO. SHE WILL ONLY GO TO AN EXPERIENCED RACING KENNEL – Otherwise, she will stay with me and we will continue to work with her because man does she add some power to our teams.

Wanda

Wanda is a spayed 9YO Gray Siberian with blue eyes. Wanda has been to many of our events, ran in all positions on my teams but seems ready for retirement. She is generally healthy with the exception of being a bit overweight. She did have one litter of pups, then started having false heats that were causing her issues so we had her spayed. Then last winter she developed a mammary tumor that was removed in the spring and she has made a full recovery running some for us this year. She loves belly rubs but only from her people and would be very happy to just enjoy some walks and time on the couch. She generally does not get along with other females. My thoughts for a good placement for her would be perhaps an older family with teens to adults.

Bandit

Bandit is a neutered 9YO Agouti colored Siberian. This guy’s floppy ears reflect his personality – lovable. Bandit is a team dog because he is just that easy going, just enjoys being in the crowd with no desire to be in front. He generally gets along with everybody – people and dogs – though he can be overwhelming at times (he likes to jump on you and gets very excited). I was on the fence about placing this guy – he is healthy, still runs good for one run but then gets bored if he has to work much more than that. He would be very happy going for some runs (thinking joggers or bikers) or playing at the dog yard where he can play instead of working.

Joker

Joker is from same litter as Coco, one of Zeppy’s pups. 10YO intact male Alaskan x Siberian husky cross. His name says it all – just a very happy go lucky kind of dog. Joker is also a hard worker and has ran in all positions on my teams, LOVES people but can be a bit territorial around other males although I think that has mellowed a bit in his age and now that he is not the alpha male in the kennel. He is generally in good health but this summer he did something to pinch a nerve in his face so the muscles on one side of his face and around his eye have deteriorated similar to Bells Palsy in humans. Then early in the season he jumped a fence and twitched a muscle in his back. I just think this guy is ready to retire with an active family for more attention.

Zeppy & Coco

Bonded pair that will only be placed together – Zeppy is an intact male Alaskan Husky with Iditarod lines (Jamie Nelson). Has been my favorite in the kennel for his 11 years – always a hard worker, loves what he does and very affectionate. A favorite at public events and great with kids. He is slowing down, a bit arthritic and needs some periodontal care. Coco is one of Zeppy’s pups – 10YO spayed female and inherited all of Zeppy’s great characteristics. She is a great lead dog but tore her ACL six years ago playing in the dog yard. She recovered well but I can see that leg is giving her trouble when she runs in a team because she works so hard. Both are on Gabapentin and joint supplements for their arthritis. Both would benefit from an active family that will still take them for some easy runs or at the very least play with them in the back yard or the dog park to keep them active, healthy and happy and then snuggle with them on the couch in the evening.

Ivy

Ivy is an intact 8YO all white female Siberian with blue eyes. Ivy is a bit more shy than the rest of my Siberians but once she gets to know someone is very affectionate. She is another one that will run when you put her on the line but would be just as happy to stay home. She also has bouts with skin/coat issues – last winter the poor thing lost much of her coat by the spring but after some routine baths with medicated shampoos once it was warm enough her beautiful coat came back in nicely by fall and now I see it is starting to thin out again. She is also another one that the flies just torture in the summer so an indoor life with her people and some good coat maintenance would be much better for her.

Samson

Samson is a 10YO Intact all white Siberian – Friendly, mellow fellow. Good at public events but not into running so much anymore. He will run but just as happy to just soak up the attention on the drop line. Generally healthy but does have some sensitive skin and the flies just torture this guy in the summer – another reason to find him a home with more routine coat maintenance and perhaps not any straw. He is currently getting a daily supplement of Biotin to help with his skin and coat.

Rudy

Rudy is a 10YO intact male R/W Siberian – This guy is friendly, mellow, easy going much like his sisters Ruby & Reba. The only reason I am even considering placing this guy is because he has terrible allergic reactions to some batches of straw. The poor guy is itchy all the time even with daily dose of Benedryl and Biotin to improve his coat and skin. Although I will miss this guy on our lines, he will be much happier in an indoor house setting with more routine coat maintenance.

Ruby & Reba

Bonded sisters to be placed together – Pretty, friendly and mellow pair of 10YO intact R/W females. Both generally in good health although they could both lose a few pounds. Reba did tear her ACL last spring playing in the dog yard but recovery has been good and both are on joint pills. Very good at our school programs and deserving of a family retirement.

First things first -- we are looking for good homes for these special dogs! This is what you need to know before consideration...

Conditions for Placements:

There is no “rehoming” fee for these dogs. These dogs have already paid that debt. I am only looking for the retirement these dogs deserve after the good 9-10 years I have enjoyed with them – I owe them, not the other way around.

A placement agreement will be required agreeing to placement conditions.

While most of our dogs are friendly and good around kids for our public events, educational programs and the rides that we offer to the public, they have not lived with small children. For that reason, I will not place any of my dogs in homes with small children that may not know any better than to climb on the dogs or mistreat them. I do not want to set my dogs up for that and I would feel terrible if something went horribly wrong.

There is no sugarcoating this – THESE DOGS WILL KILL SMALL ANIMALS – no rabbits, cats, small dogs, guinea pigs, etc. in the household.

Preference will be given to homes familiar with Huskies and other Northern breeds.

These dogs may be ready for retirement as sled dogs but they still love to run. You must have a good fenced yard for them and do not leave them loose outside unsupervised for too long even if the yard is fenced, at least until you and the dog know what to expect of each other, they are very good escape artists.

They do like to dig and will probably find a favorite spot (or more) to dig in the yard. If you want a particular spot for them to dig – dig it up, so they have some nice fresh dirt to play in – at least you have a fighting chance to choose the spot.

They have been sled dogs all their lives, living outside. They are not house broke but they have all traveled well in a dog box so should not be too hard to crate train. The first thing these guys do when we drop them out of the boxes is their business. Use that as a tool to house break them, these dogs are pretty smart and should catch on quickly.

They have been with their pack all their lives. I raised these dogs from pups and some will stay in the dog yard until the end of their days because I know they would never adjust to life outside of the commotion of the dog yard. The dogs I have listed here are the ones that I think would be happy retiring to a household lifestyle but there will still be some adjustment period from one lifestyle to the other. Be patient, keep them active and give them lots of love and attention.

Generally, my dogs live to be 13-15YO in the kennel, so the time with these dogs may not be as long as a puppy but the reward in those years will be just as great.
