🌟 The Environmental Compliance Committee has awarded the 495/90 Interchange Project the August "Project of the Month" for Environmental Excellence 🌍 We're incredibly proud of this project, especially for their efforts in protecting and preserving vital wetlands by integrating eco-friendly materials such as: Mulch Wattles, Biodegradable Wattles, and Straw Blankets for Seeding and Slope Stabilization and implementing advanced conservation strategies.

At Barletta, we understand the critical role machinery plays in our work, and with that comes the responsibility to manage the potential risks associated with using petroleum products like hydraulic fluid, engine oil, and fuel.

We have implemented rigorous procedures to respond swiftly and effectively to any accidental oil-only spills. Here’s how we handle these situations—and how you can too:

🔧 Steps for Effective Spill Response:
1. Ensure Safety First: Immediately assess the situation. If there’s any danger to personnel, evacuate the area and call for help. If it is safe, proceed with stopping the spill.
2. Stop the Source: Shut down the machinery if possible.
3. Contain the Spill: Our priority is to prevent the spill from contaminating water sources. We equip active machines with spill kits that include absorbents and containment tools. Larger kits are also available on-site for more significant spills.
4. Clean Up and Store: Once contained, collect the contaminated materials, and store them safely until they can be disposed of properly.
5. Report the Spill: Prompt reporting is crucial, including notifying the foreman, superintendent, project manager and local authorities, as appropriate.
Document the Incident: Each spill is documented in our Environmental Incident Reports. This helps us track and improve our safety protocols.

Transformation Tuesday from the MassDOT Anderson Memorial Bridge in Cambridge, MA!

Completed in 2017, construction required working from the barges in the Charles River to complete demolition of the existing structure and installation of cofferdams, concrete and stone masonry abutments and piers, and the repair of existing stone masonry abutments.

Safety Zone: Toolbox Talk for Drugs and Alcohol

Construction is a high-risk industry. High risk activities and alcohol do not mix.

When working on site you need to be alert and fully focused on the task at hand. Alcohol is a drug that depresses parts of the brain function which makes staying alert and focused more difficult.

Alcohol increases the risk of injury or damage. Those under the influence of drink or drugs at work are not only a risk to themselves, but to every person on site.

Safety Zone: Toolbox Talk for Bees and Wasps

For most people, stings from these insects do not pose a major issue. However, for others, there can be a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. Even if you have not experienced a severe allergic reaction to stings before, it is possible to have a severe reaction at any point in your life.

Bees and Wasps can cause more harm than one may assume. It is important to remember that although you may not be allergic to them, someone else may be. Always have an EPI Pen nearby if you or a coworker is severely allergic to insect stings.

Big News! 🌟 The Environmental Compliance Committee has selected the Hull Project as the very first "Project of the Month" for Environmental Excellence! 🌍

The Hull Project involves upgrading equipment and components to a wastewater treatment plant. While there are no wetlands or large areas of land disturbance, we take careful measures to ensure construction does not affect drainage on site while also protecting neighboring properties.

The Hull Project goes above and beyond daily to protect our environment around the job site.

It is important to remain mindful while using Social Media. The digital platform we have access to is a powerful source to connect with others, but it is important to follow Company policies when using Social Media. For example, don’t associate your posts or statements with the Company unless you are expressly authorized to do so, and remember that the use of Social Media is not allowed during working time. Fun Personal Fact(s)/Hobbies: I play rugby and I’m a huge fan of Formula 1 and other motorsports.

Current Co-Op Location: Wi******er Center

Responsibilities/Typical Day: Filing MRIRs, RFIs, and updated drawings, doing various site measurements, taking photos of the site, collecting delivery slips, filling out daily work logs, and setting up the seismic monitor.

Favorite Part of the Job: Getting to know all the different people both in the office and on site. Everybody is very friendly and willing to teach me about their roles and what they’re working on.

Favorite Barletta moment to date: Not just one moment, but when I go on site to take photos, people will often stop to smile or ask if they can pose for the picture. It’s always a fun time and the pictures turn out great!

Vin Barletta Continues His Dedicated Support of Team IMPACT and Their Inspiring Empowerment of Children and Their Families

Team IMPACT is a national movement connecting children living with a serious illness or disability with a dedicated sports team with the goal of inspiring, motivating, and supporting one another.

Earlier this week, Vin Barletta, Team Impact, Turner Motorsport and Barletta Engineering hosted an unforgettable event at the historic Thompson Speedway in Thompson, Connecticut! Many of the experiences provided by Team IMPACT focus on the traditional collegiate sports, however, through Vin’s passion of car racing, he has joined with Team IMPACT for a unique annual event.

Vin and other professional racers provide children and their families with a day of fast cars, good food and lifelong friendships. Each child is given the opportunity to ride in a racecar with one of the professional racers – making sure every ride is catered to each child’s comfort and desire for speed.

“Team IMPACT Day at Thompson Speedway is an incredibly unique and exciting opportunity for us to bring so many Team IMPACT families together to feel the support of our community while having a once-in-a-lifetime racecar experience,” said Ryan Irwin, Team IMPACT’s Regional Executive Director of the Northeast. “All of us at Team IMPACT are incredibly grateful for the support from our partners who put this on for us and help us bring joy to so many kids and families who need it most. We are already looking forward to next year!”

What is a Safety Disciplinary Policy?

Safety on a jobsite requires constant attention and awareness from everyone involved. The success of Barletta’s safety program correlates to the efforts put forth by all employees involved in a project.

Who Is Responsible?

Safety starts with every individual.

Every Barletta employee and subcontractor at any of the company’s jobsites or offices has the responsibility to work safely and to follow the designated Health and Safety Plan.

The Superintendent is the Competent Person for the jobsite, and the Site Safety Officer is to report any perceived violation of the Health and Safety Plan to the Superintendent.

Safety is Barletta’s highest priority.

Safety Zone: Toolbox Talk for Heat Illnesses

Construction workers are often exposed to high temperatures when working outdoors. The combination of hot weather and intense labor puts many people at risk for heat related illness.

Reminders When Working in the Heat:
• Drink plenty of cool water. Drink even if you don’t feel thirsty!
• Take frequent breaks in an air-conditioned or shaded area and wear a sunscreen.
• While complying with work location safety apparel requirements – if permissible, wear loose clothing, lightweight long sleeve shirt and long, lightweight pants in a light color.
• Limit your off-hour use of alcohol and, if taking prescription drugs, ask your doctor about any effect being in the heat may have on you.

Heat Cramps, Exhaustion & Stroke
If you don’t pay attention to these early symptoms and get out of the heat, you may experience a heat related illness like one of the following:
• Heat cramps. Most common in the arms, legs, back, and stomach.
• Treatment: Stop work, drink fluids, and rest in a cool area.
• Heat exhaustion can follow. Symptoms are pale and flushed face and neck, clammy skin, heavy sweating, fatigue, shortness of breath, headache, dizziness, or fainting, nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, and breathing.
• Treatment: Give first aid by moving the person to a cool place to rest. Remove as much clothing as possible. Give the person water. Get medical help.
• Heat stroke is the most serious stage of heat stress. Symptoms are dizziness and confusion; red, hot, dry skin; nausea and vomiting; very little sweating; rapid pulse, high body temperature around 105 degrees; convulsions; fainting. Anyone with heat stroke must be taken to a doctor or hospital immediately. Call 911

Name: Ryan Ondrejko

Hometown: I grew up in Roslindale where headquarters was originally located, but I live in Foxboro now (for the last 8 years).

Title: IT Manager

How long have you been working at Barletta: 23 Years (Started at 16 years old delivering parts to jobsites and working in the Roslindale laydown yard).

Favorite Barletta moment to date: With my position, any day I have helped people solve unexpected problems when they are up against a deadline, and seeing the relief on their face when I was able to fix it.

Responsibilities/Typical Day: I oversee all the electronic equipment in the company which includes Servers, Software, User Computers, Printers, Tablets etc. I also am responsible for the upkeep and preservation of all electronic data.

Best Part of the Job: My favorite part of the job is solving new problems every day. I never know what text messages or emails I will receive, and it keeps me on my toes. Let’s just say my job never gets boring!

Fun Personal Fact(s)/Hobbies: I used to be a Professional Race Car driver on the NHRA circuit from the ages of 17-25. I traveled the country on the weekends with my father and team. I raced a class called Pro Stock. I have traveled a quarter mile in 6 seconds moving at 215mph. I also enjoy Basketball and Golf and still play them both competitively. I also rescue beagles!

Safety Zone: Toolbox Talk for First Aid Injuries

An injury or emergency on the worksite can occur at any moment. Even if you are not certified in CPR/First Aid/AED, knowing the basics can make all the difference!

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure
- Make sure you are aware of all potential workplace hazards.
- Note the hazards most likely to lead to accidents and workplace injuries.

Actions If You or A Co-Worker Are Injured
- Survey the accident scene; check the surrounding area in all directions for any hazards and information that can be used to help the injured person.
- Call 911 first if emergency medical assistance is needed.
- Determine if you can safely get to the injured person to administer first aid and identify any injuries that will require emergency medical attention.

Educate Yourself on Emergency Response Information
Where are the first aid kits located?
First aid equipment and supplies should be stored where they can be reached quickly and easily in case of an accident. Supplies should be inspected frequently, making sure they are kept in sanitary and usable condition and re-stocked after use. Larger workplaces may need more than one fully equipped first aid kit.

What is the address of the worksite?
When contacting emergency personnel, they will ask for your location. Everyone should know the physical address of the jobsite and be able to describe their exact location without hesitation.

Who to contact?
If an injury occurs that requires medical attention, you should notify your supervisor as soon as possible. If the injured person needs emergency medical assistance, 911 should always be dialed first.

Project Spotlight:
On Saturday, June 15, at the Wi******er Center Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority - MBTA Station, BHD and its subcontractors set FRP platform panels over Waterfield Road while also placing concrete at both headhouse landings. A total of 19 FRP panels were set by Saugus Construction and Bay Crane Companies. It was a busy Saturday for all crews on site!
