New September review:

Kathy was and is a great host. The unit was very nice and the patio and yard are very private. This is a wonderful, private and casual place. Bakery stand 40 feet away. Between 06:30 & 07:30am the local bakery smells drift through patio. It’s amazing. If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing vacation, this is the place. Great place, Great host. Very private. We hope to return soon.

Kathleen’s place is a true gem. Tucked away, it really is a tropical oasis. It was the perfect get away for a tired teacher. Kathy is a phenomenal host and so kind. This place is amazing. I cannot wait to stay again.

New June review:

It’s hard to choose a place to start when everything is so wonderful. The space is adorable and has everything you need for your stay. We used it as our home base for exploring the island, the close proximity to excellent snorkeling was amazing. We spent one day just at the space enjoying the hot tub and bbq, watching the sunset from the garden. I loved being serenaded to sleep by the tree frogs and gently awakened by the birds. Kathleen is a wonderful host and gave us a tour of the extensive tropical garden. I would stay here again!

Surrounded by lush vegetation, decorated with love and perfectly located close to great snorkling spots. Kathy and Mark were very mindful and always helpful hosts. We felt right at home in this beautiful tropical paradise and would come back anytime.

New April review:

What a beautiful place. The surrounding plants, fruit trees, coconut trees, ect are so lush. It is very well kept. The Hot tub was a great touch, as was the tiki torch outside the tub. My boyfriend enjoyed the pool. I loved the close proximity to Two Step (a wonderful place to snorkel). All the snorkel gear was available for our use, as well as beach gear, coolers and more. The Bed was divine. It felt like we were in a jungle tree house, and we were never hot. it is a bit of an altitude change from Kona, so it does keep a bit cooler which I loved for sleeping. There were great local magazines and maps to use while you stay. The bathroom took some getting used to, (no door, just two curtains), but if I needed more privacy, I just made my boyfriend go outside to mediate by the beautiful Buddha statue under a tree outside.

Five Stars!

This property is on a hill with a bit of an ocean view, better when at the pool which was a beautiful small saltwater pool that was ten feet deep! The hot tub on the porch was nice for relaxing and listening to all the birds around you. It's mostly open air with an outdoor shower... loved it!! Kathleen is a photographer and her stunning photos decorate the rooms. The yard is lush with all types of tropical plants and trees. Lots of bananas and papaya they set out for you. They have a washer and dryer and lots of gear you can use. I would definitely stay here again!!

Another March 2024 review:

You have to stay here! We're so glad we chose to book Kathleen's place for our Big Island trip. If you want to feel like you really experienced Hawai'i; skip the condo/resort and stay here instead. We loved the symphony of coqui frogs at night, the screened in room, the hot tub & pool, and the lush surroundings! The yard is literally exploding with fruit that the host kindly lets you use. We ate fresh fruit every morning and cooked a delicious squash for dinner one night. The outdoor shower was heavenly! Obviously it won't be as pristine as a hotel room, but the quirks of the place are what make it so special. It is about 30-45 minutes outside of Kona so we found ourselves taking longer drives into town when we went that way, but the drive is spectacular and it didn't feel like trouble at all. And the closest town/restaurants that were only 15-18 minutes away were honestly our preferred places to go! The best beaches/snorkeling/places to visit are all like 5-10 mins from here it was perfect!

New review for March (I had friends stay in January and February, so no reviews then)

An authentic Hawaiian place and experience. No outer walls, just a screened in apartment which allowed for cool breezes throughout the day and night. We went to bed listening to the frogs croak and woke up to the roosters crowing. It was awesome. With the abundance of trees and shrubbery surrounding the place the outdoor shower and hot tub felt completely private. We loved having access to snorkeling gear, beach chairs, and water boards. Kathy was also very attentive.

Another December review:

Kathy very accurately describes her accomodations. Having all of the extra gear, including coolers and beach chairs, was a big plus. Everything was clean, and she even had fresh fruit available form the property. She mentions bringing ear-plugs, and you might want to. Yes, there were coqui frogs (crazy loud for such a small frog), but also early morning trucks on the road and dueling roosters every morning. As Kathy says though, this is a country experience ;)
Note from Kathy: The roosters are relatively new, I manage to sleep through them, so thanks Paul, for letting folks know.

We could not have asked for a better experience. Kathy had thought of everything we might need or want. The neighborhood was such a lovely community of people supporting each other. Peace walked with us every moment we were in this magical place filled with frogs and fruit trees. Only minutes from everything we wanted to do. Absolutely recommend and we will be back. Mahalo.

Kathleen's cottage is a very good value with a fantastic location if you want to be close to the water and be somewhere peaceful and quiet. We enjoyed listening to the frogs at night and the hot tub was nice after a long day. Mark was most helpful in helping us check in and get settled.

A November 2023 Review:

If you want to experience a piece of real Hawaii, this is your place. Wake to the sounds of the luscious gardens surrounding you on all sides, fall asleep to the lull of the chorus of nature. This is especially great for those of us who have ringing in our ears all the time, I did not hear that for two whole weeks that I stayed at The Tropical Hideaway. Feel the gentle Tradewinds blowing through the screens surrounding the bed while dozing in the afternoon sun. Enjoy the privacy of your own little tropical screened in hut evoking the feel and relaxation of living in real Hawaii.. the way you may have always imagined. Shower in the delightful outdoor shower with nice hot water while watching the sun sink into the Pacific as the Banana Tree flutters overhead. In fact, eat Bananas from the property, never fresher. Take a lovely walk down Painted Church Road enjoying the same magical surroundings, and explore the Peace Garden, well worth the modest $10 entry fee. A True delight.

Five stars!
We have nothing but good things to say about our stay at Tropical Hideaway! We had everything we needed, and it was the perfect place to enjoy beautiful Hawaii! We loved waking up every day to such a beautiful view, and going to sleep to the chirping of the birds, frogs, and bugs! The privacy of the property was awesome, and it was still such a short drive to great snorkeling and our other adventures! The hosts were so kind and ensured we had everything we needed, and gave us some good pointers for things to do on the island. We loved the fact that the place was just screened in instead of windows, it allowed for a really nice breeze and even without heating and cooling we were always comfortable! We enjoyed using the hot tub every day, and the grill and cooking appliances allowed us to cook several meals while we were there. We loved the ease of recycling and composting as well-everything is set up for little waste! We highly highly recommend this stay, and would love to stay here again if we make it back to Hawaii someday!!

Kathy was extremely helpful from the moment of booking. Her instructions were clear and precise. Upon arrival she was welcoming upon greeting and gave us a tour of our accommodation and all the additional beach equipment that we could utilise during our stay. We felt as though we were in our very own tropical paradise.

A September-October review:

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Tropical Hideaway, conveniently located a few minutes drive from Two Step beach+many coffee shops, and about 30 minutes from Kona (which is you ask me, is the perfect distance from the busy tourist town). The space itself is beautiful and private, although the space is below Kathy’s living quarters, we truly felt we had the whole property to ourselves on our honeymoon and barely saw/heard anyone the whole week we stayed. The sunsets from our private hot tub were gorgeous, the home is well stocked, and the frogs put us right to sleep at night( bring ear plugs if you never have slept in a place with frogs as they can be loud to some people). Kathy was a great host, giving us a tour when we arrived then leaving us to enjoy our privacy. She is responsive and very helpful of what’s locally around. We came for our Honeymoon and wished we could stay longer! 100% would stay again on our next visit to the BI!

My husband and I live on the east side of the Big Island. I have stayed at the Tropical Hideaway in the past. I always tell our guests to Hawaii to stay at this place, and they thank me for the great tip. I can think of no other place that offers this incredible list of special features: Hot Tub, Cool Pool, outdoor shower, fresh treats from the fruit and vegetable gardens, spectacular sunsets over the ocean, well-appointed kitchen, outdoor eating area, proximity to the best snorkeling spot on the Big Island, thoughtful host with inside information about local sites for underwater life and special hidden places. It is located up in the cool forest. If you like congested condo sites, you are missing the real Hawaii.

This place was clean and welcoming. Kathy is very upfront about the frigs ar night, so you might want ear plugs, but she does communicate this. Mark was great (Kathy was away)! I enjoyed visiting with him and he showed us around the property. Always answered his phone. She has a nice area and Two Step (Place of Refuge) is amazing.

Another May review:

My husband and I had an amazing stay her during our honeymoon! The screened in studio helped us to enjoy the lush, tropical setting. I enjoyed falling asleep to the ocean breeze and sounds of nature. This was a relaxing and private place to come back to after a day of exploring the island. The hot tub was great for relaxing sore muscles after hiking in the volcanoes. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to experience Hawaii outside of the traditional tourist locations.
