Amanda Cochran is running against Mike Greenwell for the Lee County Board of County Commissioners!

If you are a registered Lee County voter and would like to have a local commissioner who will listen to the public, please vote for her!

You may recall that Greenwell voted for the code change which will allow the overdevelopment of South Seas / Captiva. Subsequently, the CCA has filed a lawsuit against Lee County which is still going through the legal process.

IT'S SEA TURTLE NESTING SEASON!
Sea turtle nesting season takes place annually from May 1 through Oct. 31. To help make sure they have a successful nesting season, please take the following into consideration when visiting Captiva’s beaches:

Turn off or shield all lights that are visible from the beach. Do not use flashlights or cell phone lights on the beach. If necessary, use amber or red LED bulbs.
Do not disturb the screens covering nests. They prevent predators from eating the eggs and the hatchlings emerge through the holes without assistance.
Remove all beach furniture and equipment from the beach at night.
Dispose of fishing line properly to avoid wildlife entanglement.
Fill in large holes that can trap hatchlings and nesting sea turtles.
Do not disturb nesting turtles – please do not to get too close, shine lights on, or take flash photos of nesting sea turtles.
Pick up litter.

Did you know why artificial lights are bad for Sea Turtles?

Remember NO WHITE FLASHLIGHTS on the beach until 10/31.

The first sea turtle nest was documented this morning and it was a rare Leatherback. It's tracks way wider than 4 feet. This species of sea turtle can weigh over 2000 pounds.

Today, the City of Sanibel is issuing a "Heavy Traffic Advisory" for this afternoon, and early evening, so Sanibel residents can plan their travel accordingly.

Today we have experienced an extremely high volume of vehicles that have entered Sanibel Island. As a result of this volume, we expect heavy vehicular traffic on-island for the remainder of the day. Motorists should expect substantial traffic delays exiting the island this afternoon and into the early evening. Heavy traffic is expected to continue for the remainder of the week as seasonal residents and visitors return to the island and recovery work continues.

Motorists are encouraged to download the FREE "Sanibel Bound" App on their phone so that they can view and have immediate access to real-time traffic conditions anytime.

Sanibel Police Chief Bill Dalton urges everyone to "be patient." Our number one priority is safety. Please follow the direction of law enforcement personnel and, to reduce congestion, consider avoiding off-island directions of travel between 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
