One Step Forward....Two Steps Back
I was so excited a couple of weeks ago, looking forward to Coconut Castaway being available at the end of the month, only to discover we had a major setback this week 😭 Some of you know that my husband has been living at the home during the rebuild (now hitting 18 months), trying to find contractors to do all of the work. He's missed birthdays, holidays, family life in general. It's been difficult for all of us, to say the least.
With constant hope in our hearts, even with all of the setbacks we've had over the past 18 months, we thought we were close. We let our guard down trusting what we were being told, only to be let down again. It's crushing.
BUT... we're moving forward and we'll get there, albeit later than expected. I'm excited to visit the island over spring break, so we can all be together as a family and help with whatever we can.
This time I'll be waiting to announce a reopening date until the work is done and all we're doing is decorating! I'm really looking forward to that day and hope you'll all support us when that happens 😁 I'll try to post more fun photos while I'm there!
We're getting so close! A lot of work has been going on at Coconut Castaway over the past year+ and we're pushing towards the finish line. Here are a few recent photos of some of the progress we've made. This includes a few wonderful improvements, such as adding tile to the upstairs lanai and pavers in our driveway. We'll also have a full house reverse osmosis water system in place. We'll be renting again starting March 30th and look forward to welcoming guests back!
We had a fun visitor last night!! This appears to be an Eastern Screech Owl. S/he looks a bit young since it’s thinner than I’d expect for a full grown adult. I originally walked right past it, probably within a foot from my head. S/he’s been spotted in our garage a couple of times too. I absolutely ❤️ owls, so this was a real treat for me!

Hello from Coconut Castaway !! We’re on the island this week for the Thanksgiving holiday warming our toes in the sand. We’ll have lots of fun photos to share this week, but we’ll start with a cute video our daughter created to post on our new TikTok account: .castaway make sure to follow us!
First, some fun updates on the island...⛱☀
Ospreys are nesting close by - it's been fun to watch their habits. We believe they're finally in the incubation and nestling period, due to a late start with building their nest. Hopefully we'll be able to see little heads popping up in a few weeks time. We're thinking of names for the parents now 😄 Any suggestions are welcome!
The dolphins have also been very active around the island. We've seen a lot of them around 'Dolphin Beach' 🐬on the east side of the air strip (in Pine Island Sound) and on the Gulf side. Watching them hunt together has been pretty entertaining.
House Update 🏠: Still a work in progress. Unfortunately not too much to report outside of the initial tear out, but we're hoping they'll be starting on our roof in the next 5-6 weeks, then our windows and doors should come in around mid-to end of May. We're hoping to be close on getting contractors confirmed for our siding and interior. Pictures of the house to come in another few days. I joked about renaming the house The Broken Coconut 😆
We're looking forward to documenting and sharing more photos once things really start moving!
It's been a while since I've posted and so I thought I would provide a little update. We are still working with insurance adjusters, contractors, etc. and the process has been slow. Some positives: Electricity is back, water is back, and initial remediation has started. Once we get more into the rebuilding process we'll certainly share some photos with everyone. For now, I've decided to share one of my favorite sunset photos taken at the end of our road.

It's been just over a week from my last post. We've gone from being relieved knowing that those who stayed on the island were accounted for and safe, to being devastated for those in SW FL who have lost so much. What I have also watched is how communities have come together to support one another during their time of need. North Captiva Island is no exception. This little island has such an amazing, strong and resilient community! And while we are currently in the process of cleaning, fixing, rebuilding, please know that we will look like this again 🌴

Many may not realize that most of the golf carts they use when renting a home on the island are owned by the homeowners. When you rent our home it includes one golf cart (our 2021 Precedent Club Cart) and we now have another shiny new golf cart - our 2023 Onward Club Cart available for rent with parties of 5+. They both have fishing pole racks on them and are lifted to help when the roads get puddles from storms (note: they are not ATVs like some might think... quite the opposite!). We enjoy being able to offer these golf carts to responsible guests! www.CoconutCastaway.com
