So, the bad news is…Milton got the best of the Safety Harbor Gazebo (rumor is it will get rebuilt)….good news is, Milton and Helene did not take the beauty of this island away! And, we did get lots of new sand, so the beach is looking good!

One of our favs on Matlatcha - please stop by and see them when visiting North Captiva Island (great lunch stop before boarding the ferry or on the way to the airport)! Try the clam chowder (you can thank me later 😉).

To my Facebook community - Once again, our area of Florida has suffered from Hurricanes Helene and Milton (within two weeks of each other). Our Pennsylvania and Facebook community was very generous after Hurricane Ian hit in 2022. Through the donation drive that we organized after Hurricane Ian, our community was able to help rebuild classrooms for the Sanibel School. The response was incredible!

Lorrie and I are asking for your support again to help hardworking individuals get back on their feet!

This time, we have decided to "adopt" professionals in the hospitality and service industry. SWFL relies heavily on travel and tourism for their economy, and a large percentage of locals' income source comes from this industry. These individuals have had rough years; COVID in 2020, Ian in 2022 and now Milton and Helene in 2024. They simply can't catch a break. Lorrie has taken the time to speak to each of the selected individuals personally. We wish we could select more individuals because they are very hardworking and humble people (there were quite a few more referred to us, but we don't want to overcommit). The individuals did not want to ask for help because they simply want to work and have their lives return to normal. If you are able and inclined, you can find their wish lists in the comments section of this post. We would appreciate any support that you are able to offer.

A few notes:

The lists are heavy on gift card requests. This is because the common needs are groceries, gas and medicines. The easiest way to support this need is to donate gift cards so they can be purchased as needed. Plus, it helps to produce revenue to the local economy.

Your gifts will be shipped directly to the individual. Upon checkout, please be sure to select the gift recipient as the shipping address. You will only see their name. Their address is hidden for privacy purposes.

One individual has asked to remain completely anonymous. For that individual, you will see my name as the shipping address. However, the address associated with this list is the recipient's address. Please do not hesitate to purchase from this list.

Great news! Now, we just need the marina to get their new equipment so we can get our boat down and we will be there to support Cabbage Key. If you are in the area and out on the water, go visit them. Cabbage Key was the first place that we boated after Hurricane Ian (about a month/month and a half after he rolled through), and it gave us all a renewed sense of optimism!

People often ask “Why do people rebuild? Why do people stay?” after facing so much devastation. The post below explains why! This is our fourth or fifth storm (third major) that we have weathered, and it is the sense of community that gets you through the rebuilding process. You can’t give up when you people around you working so hard to restore the community! Thank you to everyone mentioned below for their selfless dedication to our beautiful island. Despite having homes and businesses of their own that need attention, they are working round the clock to take care of our island!

Looking for a way to help? We have partnered with some locals and have identified and selected some really hardworking people who could use a little extra help right now. All of them work in service industries that are heavily reliant on travel and tourism. Because of the current situation, they find themselves unemployed or underemployed. We have created Amazon Wish Lists to help them get through this rough patch until we all can return to the island and they can return to work. Message us, and we can send you the links for a few individuals if you are looking to contribute directly to someone in the area😁
