Hurricane Helene Update from Boats and Fun

We’re happy to announce that despite some flooding, we’ve cleaned up and our store on North Captiva is back open 7 days a week, from 9 AM to 5 PM! You can make reservations for your next trip online or by phone.

We’re also relieved to report that our entire boat and golf cart fleet were spared by the flooding! 🛺 However, there is still standing water on the island, but with dry weather, we’re optimistic that conditions will improve soon. We’ll keep you updated on the progress as the island recovers!

Did you know that these gentle giants are an integral part of the North Captiva Island experience? 🏝️ They add that extra bit of magic to our vacations! But to ensure their safety and well-being, we all need to play our part in protecting them. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind:

🚫 Don't offer them freshwater from hoses or bottles: While it might seem harmless, feeding manatees alters their behavior. Let's keep their wild instincts intact!

⚓ Slow down near the shore: Within 200 yards, remember to maintain idle speed. Manatees are slow movers and need time to react to oncoming boats. By slowing down, we give them a better chance to avoid collisions.

🛡️ Know the law: Manatees are not just adorable, they're also endangered. Protected by various laws, including the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act, harassing or harming them is illegal. Remember, offering them water can result in fines of up to $5,000. Let's respect their sanctuary status and give them the space they need to thrive.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, our community and visitors have faced challenges navigating into the island with many channel markers missing. But fear not, because the Boats and Fun Team stepped up to the challenge!

We're thrilled to announce that we've taken it upon ourselves to replace most of the missing channel markers, ensuring safer and more enjoyable journeys for everyone in and out of the island. 🙌⛵

With a passion for our community and a dedication to service, we've donated and installed new markers to help guide boats safely through the channels. It's our way of giving back and ensuring that everyone can continue to enjoy the beauty of our waterways without worry.

Yes!!! We are 100% Open!

Spring Break is just around the corner and after a tough few months of rebuilding we are proud to be back and fully open again! Boats and Fun is open seven days a week from 9am-5pm. Come on by to say hi or to rent fishing rods, golf carts, kayaks, bikes, or boats. Also, our reservations team is excited to take your calls and schedule a fishing charter, private water taxi or tour. We can’t wait to see you all back!

Cleanup and restoration continues on North Captiva, and we’re happy to report that most of the hurricane debris has been picked up by our store! Crews are working non-stop on the rest of the island! In case you missed our update email, we've been hard at work getting our storefront back to its former glory. Despite the damage to the building, we're hoping to come back better than ever before! With Captain Bill, Captain Robin, and the rest of our team we've got a lot of brainpower on hand to make our shop as great as possible. We can't wait to get back in there and celebrate one of the few true positive outcomes of these tough times. First of all, we wanted to lead off by saying a huge thank-you to everyone who has helped support us in this difficult time. Whether you got a gift card, bought some merchandise through our store, or just called or wrote to check in and let us know you were thinking of us we appreciate it all greatly. It’s been tough at times with the uncertainty of when we’ll be able to get back to doing what we love but with support from all over the country and globe, as well as the dedication of everyone on North Captiva working each and every day to rebuild and restore it, we’re hopeful that we will persevere.

To those of you who have made orders through the online store, we very much hope you enjoy your North Captiva branded apparel, hats, souvenirs, and other island gear! Online commerce is certainly not our expertise so we appreciate your patience and understanding as we put together orders and ship them as fast as we can.

The online store is one of our only ways of staying “open” right now—your orders mean much more than you can imagine, they keep us going and hopeful, which is an incredible thing! Keep checking back, we are working on adding new inventory and learning about new ways we can connect from a distance!

Dear North Captiva Community,
 
As you are aware Hurricane Ian has devastated Southwest Florida. We wanted to let you know that the Boats and Fun family is safe and doing OK. There is significant damage to North Captiva and surrounding islands and it looks like it may be a while before things return to normal, which is devastating, but a challenge we know the North Captiva community can and will overcome!
 
CURRENT STATUS:
We are currently providing water taxi services for those aiding in the damage assessment, cleanup, and restoration efforts on the island. Soon after the storm we secured safe docking for taxis and are running a reliable service as we await the reopening of marinas on Pine Island. We have faith that we’ll come back stronger and more resilient than ever after this obstacle. You may contact us at our regular number, 1(800) 991-3259.
 
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT:
Boats and Fun is a small family business. We have been on North Captiva for more than 15 years and currently 12 families depend on their work with us. In all honesty, we could use any and all support from our community so that we can maintain jobs during this difficult time and as we figure out our next steps. Various homeowners and business on North Captiva are working on creating an island restoration fund. Boats and Fun will donate 10% of all online orders to support this fund.

Family—
The Boats and Fun team is currently working on the immediate recovery needs of our families and crew. Our barrier islands and local communities have been devastated by Hurricane Ian and everyone’s safety and wellbeing are our top priority as we continue assessing damages and picking up the pieces over the next few days.

If you are trying to reach us about reservations, please know that our internet and phones are still down or spotty at best. We will get in touch with you as soon as we can. We are looking at a lengthy recovery process on North Captiva and will share details with you as they become available and we have better communication channels.

In the meantime we are working on restoring immediate & safe water taxi operations to the island and surroundings to assist with safety and recovery. If you have supplies or transportation needs to/from North Captiva know we are sorting logistics and hope to be able to meet these needs soon. If you can, please message us so we can assess, prioritize, and prepare as required.
