In January 2019 a group of people on a page dedicated to Carbondale, Illinois in the ‘80s and ‘90s decided to establish a scholarship for current students at Southern Illinois University. The SIU Foundation decided to go along with the name and within 2 months of setting up the scholarship, the Foundation had received more than $50,000 in donations for the scholarship. The scholarship is
endowed and will be awarded to SIU students in perpetuity. Donations towards the scholarship will also be accepted in perpetuity, so if you would like to contribute, please do so. (PLEASE NOTE: THE SIU FOUNDATION IS THE ONLY LEGITIMATE ENTITY THAT ACCEPTS DONATIONS FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP.) If you would like to contribute, please go to: https://siuf.org/giving/payment.php
Choose "Campus Wide" and then in the "Choose Fund to Support" pull-down menu, select "Balancing Education, Experience, and Reality (BEER) Scholarship". For reference, the requirements for the scholarship are:
1. Junior or Senior Status at SIU
2. Open to all majors
3. Applicant must be in academic good standing
4. Applicant to submit a one page or less statement of why they came to love SIU. (A committee of SIU employees will pick the actual winner.) Note to potential applicants: The scholarship is administered by SIU. To learn more about all of SIU's scholarships (including how to apply for them), please go here: https://scholarships.siu.edu/
