A note from our founder ~

As I reflect on 48 years of life, I realize that the true essence of our journey is rooted in kindness and connection. It begins with kindness to ourselves. When we treat ourselves with compassion and understanding, we create a foundation for meaningful connections with others—whether family, friends, strangers, or even the natural world. This practice of kindness, first inward and then outward, deepens the relationships that shape our lives.

The bonds we form with our loved ones—family, friends, and even casual acquaintances—anchor us and give us a sense of belonging. The smallest gestures—a phone call, a moment of listening, a shared laugh—hold profound power. It is in these connections that we experience love, empathy, and the beautiful complexity of being human. Likewise, even encounters with strangers, brief as they may be, can remind us of the shared humanity that unites us all. A smile exchanged or an unexpected act of kindness can create a ripple of understanding, reminding us that we are all part of something greater.

Equally important is our connection to the natural world. The earth, in all its beauty and mystery, provides the backdrop for our lives. The rhythm of the seasons, the quiet rustling of trees, the vastness of the sky—these are not just things to observe, but elements to connect with. We are part of this intricate web of life, and honoring that connection brings humility, patience, and a deep sense of gratitude.

As I step into another year, I carry these truths with me: that kindness to oneself is the foundation of all meaningful connections, and that the threads that tie us to family, friends, strangers, and the natural world are what give life its depth and purpose. In embracing these connections—with ourselves, others, and the world around us—I find the true richness of life.

I’m excited to deepen our connection in the coming year, sharing new memories and experiencing those flowstate moments together—where time seems to fade, and we’re fully immersed in the present. These moments of true connection are what I’m most looking forward to.

If you’re stuck in a rut, you might try going on a physical or mental adventure, Arthur C. Brooks writes: “Even if your heroic exploits prove to be more uncomfortable or painful than you expected, that, too, is part of your journey.” https://theatln.tc/4emNqMiI

In 2017, a scholar in Australia proposed a provocative hypothesis: Materially comfortably humans, the researcher proposed, are still drawn to difficult, even dangerous tasks. Why? Because “the universe is at once life-giving and deadly,” and therefore, from the outset, “humans needed to embrace risk to flourish,” Brooks explains. This characteristic has also been reinforced by culture. In 1949, for example, Joseph Campbell laid out the structure of the “monomyth.” In these narratives, Brooks writes, the “hero’s journey” begins “with a call to adventure, proceeds through a series of difficult trials and dangerous obstacles, and finally ends in triumph.”

Framing one’s life as a quest can lead to positive transformation, Brooks writes. These kinds of challenging adventures don’t necessarily need to be physical in nature to be beneficial; they can also be mental. For instance, one way to harness the power of the hero’s journey is by using the narrative as a way to reframe your difficulties. “This can be especially powerful if you have recently endured an event or hardship from which you’re still struggling to recover,” Brooks writes. By recasting your hardships, he writes, “you can embark on the second stage of your journey: learning to overcome emotional obstacles and getting stronger through your pain.”

Another way to channel the hero’s-journey narrative, especially “if your life simply feels dull and gray, is to go find a challenge that is worthwhile, hard, maybe even scary,” Brooks continues. This could include announcing your intention to start a job search, going back to school, or signing up for a half-marathon. “Your adventure should have a goal, it is true, but it is called a hero’s journey for a reason,” Brooks writes. “Happiness comes not from the blip that is a moment of victory but from the long arc of living, learning, and loving.”
