Hey LifeCycle friends…

We are having a training night in partnership with the Dickinson Handlebar @ New Life Community in the LifeCycle shop.

On Wednesday October 11th from 5:30- 7:30pm we will be working through a proven process and checklist to learn how to tune up and repair a bicycle from wheel to wheel:) We have several spots available to join in. Please message us if you are interested in attending the training. We are always in need of more team members and love adding. New friends to the LifeCycle crew.

Jerome and Cortney recently moved to town and needed transportation, so we hooked them up with two of the nicest bikes we had that were collecting dust all winter! They helped out in the shop tonight, and we all learned from each other and had a good time. They may be catching the stoke bug, and said they want to start coming in to wrench more! If you think you may want to catch the bug, take advantage of this warm weather and ride over.

NorthSide Ride is on!!! Come and ride regardless of rain. No better way to learn to ride in weather conditions:)

Hi! Things slowed down a bit over the holidays, but we’re still in action!

Our hours have slightly changed in the new year; now we’re open 10-2 Wed, 4-7 Thurs, and 10-2 Fri.

As always, come on in to volunteer, donate bikes or parts, or even throw your best bike-related questions at us! Thursday nights are when we have a work party; all are welcome to come help fix bikes, strip junked bikes for parts, patch tubes, clean, organize- there’s something for people of all skill levels!

It’s another winter wonder land out there today. We closing due to poor road conditions. Stay warm and stay safe!

Twas the bike before Christmas, when all through the town
Not a bike wheel was turning, not uphill nor down
Kids’ helmets were hung by the bike rack with care
In hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of training wheels danced in their heads;

Volunteer highlight: This is Ben. He’s been the “face” of LifeCycle for the past many months, and is the one responsible for the massive reorganization the shop has gone through (in photo 1 he’s proudly displaying the 11mm wrench that got lost in the shuffle that turned up the other day). He also built us new work benches and storage solutions. It would really take up too much space to list off all he’s done; the commitment he’s shown to LifeCycle and the people and volunteers who come through the shop is immeasurable. He’s a great teacher, and has inspired and empowered many regular volunteers to keep coming back.

Not only is Ben a fantastic bike mechanic and organizer, he’s a renaissance man. In a past life he was in the Peace Corps, doing stints in Zambia and Peru. He learned how to build a bamboo bike in New York City, then rode it to Pittsburgh, and then established a bamboo bike shop in Ghana(!) He built his own house! He made a pedal-powered sewing machine! He builds clocks out of all sorts of stuff as ! He’s also really nice and humble, and will probably be embarrassed by this post!

When he’s not at LC or commuting in from Sherman’s Dale on the electric bike he built, he’s hanging with his wife and two dogs at their lovely spot in the country.

Come say hi to Ben, you’ll be sure to learn something from him.

Thank you to the Carlisle Barracks, War College, and all the folks involved who gathered up and donated close to 100 bikes last week! What a huge blessing. We hope to get them fixed up over the winter and ready to roll for the spring.

We are just so thankful for all the donations, volunteers, and love from the community this year. We have gotten a bunch of bikes out, and it is Partners like the Carlisle Barracks that allow us to continue to serve.

We are starting to dig into these bikes. If you have any interest in learning to fix bikes or just volunteer, then check out our open hours and stop on by. :-)

Volunteer Highlight: This is one of our leaders Brian. He is the glue that brings together cycling as transportation in Carlisle. Not only does he help guide , he also helps , , , and the borough of Carlisle promote commuting by bicycle.

He is the one responsible for most of the amazing steel bike builds that were destined for the scrap heap. He adds tons of content to our social media accounts, teaches the volunteer mechanics, helps folks who walk in the door, and brings a warm disposition to the shop. He cares deeply about bikes and people, which makes him a powerful advocate.

When he isn’t at the shop or bringing folks together, he is spending time with his wife and three kids, taking his dogs for a walk, or shredding one of his many amazing custom bicycles. He recently cycled from Pittsburgh to DC on his one of a kind .

When you see Brian give him a huge hug for all the amazing things he does. He is the glue that keeps us together.

Sometimes our regular volunteers don’t have time to be in the shop, but a bike will catch their eye, and they’ll take it home to work on. That’s what aka did with this USA-made Raleigh Tactic CX that came to us in very rough condition. Brian stripped it down, cleaned it, overhauled and replaced many parts, and now it’s ready to be quick, attractive, and safe transportation for someone in our community!

Volunteer highlight: This is Dave. He was a public school administrator in a previous life. Now he is one of the nicest, capable, and fun volunteer mechanics this side of North Street.

He uses his retirement time to help us get bikes out to folks in need of transportation. And he always does it with a smile and kind word.

He often makes it into the shop twice a week! When he isn’t wrenching, he enjoys riding, kayaking and spending time with family.

If you see him out in the wild give him a high five. He is an awesome member of the LifeCycle team!

One of our awesome volunteers (Cindy) made us this amazing Christmas tree out of bicycle chains. Look closely at all the detail.

It brings us tons of cheer as we continue to fix bikes leading up to Christmas.

Volunteer highlight: This is Jim. He started volunteering a few months ago, but can’t always make it into the shop on a weekly basis. So he asked if there was anything he could do from home. Little did he know what he was getting into. :-)

He has now taken on the huge task of testing and patching tubes at home. Every couple weeks he stops by and takes the old tubes and drops off tubes that are ready to go.

It makes such a huge difference! Whenever someone comes in with a flat, we can quickly change the tube and get them rolling again.

Many thanks to Jim and his patching excellence.

We made this spoke caddie from recycled pvc pipes and an old pallet. It helps to sort and organize our parts so we can better fix bikes for folks in our community.

Stop by and help us fill this spoke caddie with lots of different wheel sizes. Taking apart wheels doesn’t take much experience, but can make a huge difference.
