“My take on the unofficial cocktail of Nevada. In partnership with @travelnevada, I was able to travel across northern Nevada to imbibe on Picon Punches across the Basque region of the state. Inspired by what I sipped and savored across 3 different iconic locations that are widely known for serving it, I figured I’d give my own twist to the original—but respecting the recipe as much as possible. To do so, I chose to do a few things to elevate the spec: spiced up my own grenadine, used a delicious aged Spanish brandy, and incorporated a modern bottle of Amer Picon. PICON PUNCH .33oz | 10ml homemade grenadine* .5oz | 15ml Spanish brandy (Cardenal Mendoza Brandy) 1.5oz | 45ml Amer Picon (PICON) Splash of club sodaCombine grenadine, brandy, and Picon into a glass with ice. Stir to incorporate, chill, and lightly dilute. Top with club soda and garnish with an expressed lemon peel. GRENADINE* 250g pomegranate juice 205g cane sugar 1 cinnamon stick 5g cardamom pods 5g star anise pods 10g lemon peel 10g orange peel 15ml lemon juice Crush and grind spices lightly. Bring all ingredients to a simmer, then let it steep for 15-20 mins. Strain out solids, reserve in the fridge for up to 3-4 weeks.” 🎥+✍️: notjustabartender on IG
“The Picon Punch is the unofficial cocktail of Nevada—and in partnership with @travelnevada, I want to show you the journey I took to discover where to drink it. The Basque settlers who immigrated to San Francisco during the Gold Rush eventually became sheep herders throughout northern Nevada, bringing with them the love for the Picon Punch. There are now several iconic places to imbibe this cultural cocktail. I was able to visit three establishments: The Martin Hotel, The Star Hotel, and Louis Basque Corner—all featuring their own unique history. While the ingredients were nearly identical at these locations, each had slight variations that allowed them to stand apart. No matter the location, the cocktail is not for the faint of heart.” ✍ + 🎥: notjustabartender on IG
