Flying with the Lake Tahoe Eagles.

Over the last 20 years of flying around Lake Tahoe, the Bald Eagles seem to come out and meet with us. As we approach an area along the Lake Tahoe south shore between the Tahoe Keys and Emerald Bay, they come out and greet us as we fly by. Sometimes I circle around and we circle together.

I get the sense they want to fly with us. Other birds fly away. Bald Eagles fly towards us. Typically, they are too far away to photograph, but this time as the Eagle approached us, I was able to get a shot together as we passed by.

Lake Tahoe offers so many amazing experiences.

Great flying this spring. Snow in the mountains, great weather and beaches are empty. Amazed at how Marlette Lake is held back by such a narrow ridge over 1000 feet above Lake Tahoe.

This has been a spectacular summer here flying At Lake Tahoe. One of my greatest joys is flying with Sheldon of Lake Tahoe Balloons. We coordinate on the radio so we both know who is doing what. This unique shot (top), is where Sheldon can get lower than me as he brings his people floating over the trees. We share many of the customers who do both and they rave about what a great experience they have in Lake Tahoe.

This is one of the best times to be in Lake Tahoe. The beaches are empty so we can buzz the beach, the fall colors are stunning, not a soul on the lake and great weather. This couple was celebrating their 10 wedding anniversary with a flight.

When there are thick clouds, sometimes we go under the clouds to get to Lake Tahoe, other times we go over the clouds to get to Lake Tahoe. Today we went over the top of the clouds to get to Lake Tahoe. Amazing cloud formations with a strong East wind. Interesting how the wind comes over from the valley forming the smooth silky clouds as the air rises over the mountain ridge and how this is over powered by puffy thermal clouds breaking through the wind and skyrocketing up. Super happy customer you can see with his big smile. Looks like another two weeks of great flying ahead.

Labor Day after the torrential rains shut down most outdoor activities. With moisture still around, we got some clouds in the mountains over the East Shore that were magical. The term “Glory” is the aviation term for the colorful full rainbow shadow of the sun on the clouds. Today the Glory was intense in the alluring clouds. Tahoe always astounds in so many ways.

What a spectacular summer in Lake Tahoe. Mild winds, no fires, plenty of snow in the mountains, water level high and flying with my friend Sheldon with Lake Tahoe Balloons. Two of the most unique experiences in the world working together enhancing the Lake Tahoe Experience. We get on our private air to air radio frequency and coordinate with each other. Again, I am amazed at Sheldon’s skill taking off and landing on the boat/barge, I call it an “Aircraft Carrier”. Thanks to all the participants this year as we head into fall, another great season for Lake Tahoe.

We get to see every beach on Lake Tahoe. Here are some selected beaches. From a low view to a high view, we see Kiva Beach (South Lake Tahoe), Baldwin Beach (South Lake Tahoe), and Sand Harbor (North East Lake Tahoe).

Celebrity Golf Tournament 2023 perspective from Paul Hamilton in the powered hang glider. The biggest difference for flying at Lake Tahoe is all the jets coming and going out of the South Lake Tahoe Airport. For this event, as is done every year, a temporary FAA control tower is set up to handle all the additional air traffic. This is the busiest the South Lake Tahoe Airport gets each year. I generally stay below the jet traffic about 500 feet above the lake level. We even have the private jets parking at the Carson City Airport. Amongst the crowded South Lake Tahoe scene, we have Meeks Bay shown as tranquil this early in the morning. Great times at Lake Tahoe.

Big event at Sand Harbor today. As we flew from Incline to the East Shore, Sand Harbor traffic was backed all the way to incline, about 8:30 AM. WOW. As we got to Sand Harbor we saw all these boats out on the Lake headed out to the middle? After examining this we saw there were swimmers near each boat. Anyone know what this event is?, where is the goal? and how many swimmers make it to goal?

With a flight around Lake Tahoe, Greg and I met up with a Black Piper Cub. We coordinated and was able to get this shot of the Cub over Incline and the two Powered Hang Gliders. Thanks to my new friend Mike in the Black Cub for flying with us.

Great time to be at Lake Tahoe. Pine pollen creates artwork in the water. It has baffled me exactly how the pollen tends to gather in such artistic designs. Must be a mixture of water and air currents that create such masterpieces in the water. At Sand Harbor 8:00 am, traffic backed up from Incline, looks like parking lot full and plenty of people on the beaches. We get to see every beach on Lake Tahoe and plenty of people. July is when summer tourism really kicks off at Tahoe.

Today’s flight was as expected, beautiful, warm, calm and crowded. Interesting that Emerald Bay was still pretty quiet but Sand Harbor was bumper to bumper trying to get in and it looked like the parking lot was full at 8:30 AM. Optimum conditions for Lake Tahoe. Each day there are amazing events at Lake Tahoe. Today, my new friend Shawn Linch masterfully landed his outback big tire airplane high in the Sierra Mountains, East of Lake Tahoe near Marlette Lake. We spotted him going low, must have been checking the area out, and he came back and landed out the peak. WOW what a skilled pilot. The far away shot of Marlette Lake shows the snow field in the middle slightly above and to the left of center. I know it was hot and high density altitude. Thanks Shawn for the impressive demo.

Somedays we get that magical time as the storms are building but still great flying. Today was one of those days. About noon time clouds were forming, allowing us the time to get up to Lake Tahoe before the typical afternoon rain comes. The mountains surrounding the lake were filled with clouds but the lake was clear. Tahoe always satisfies.

This is a story about Lorraine Burke Haas, a Tahoe goddess that has become a regular favorite of mine. She has a flight mission each time we fly with a specific route to see her special stomping grounds surrounding Fallen Leaf Lake. With an incredible history living and working in the South Lake Tahoe/Fallen Leaf Lake area, I learn so much from Lorraine about the incredible history and my love of the surrounding Tahoe area keeps growing. She is an incredible lady, and her everlasting beauty compliments the South Lake Tahoe and Fallen Leaf Lake area. I feel so lucky to have the privilege of sharing flights with extraordinary people such as Lorraine.

This is a great time of year. Beaches are deserted, water falls are flowing big time. Here we have Eagle Falls at Emerald Bay and Cascade Falls at Cascade Lake. Hopefully they will rescue the picnic tables on Baldwin Beach before the water lever rises more. Each flight I can see the water lever in Lake Tahoe get higher. Spring has sprung.
