They say that all good things must come to an end, and day 8 was the end of our vacation. We stopped by Buck's Coffee Cafe - Cashiers to fuel up for the road, and made one last stop at The Village Green to let the kids run around on the playground before hitting the road. Day 7 was spent running errands and working around the cabin. Lots of little chores and yard work - check out the giant blooms on our hydrangea! We ended the day with dinner at Happs Place, which has a fantastic outdoor dining area, complete with a co****le set to keep the kids entertained. And I forgot to mention our amazing date night on day 6 - we had an incredible meal at The Orchard Restaurant, Events Barn & Guest Cottage - delicious food, great wine, and a charming setting!

Day 6, and it was time for a slower pace. We spent much of the day at the cabin, enjoying the sunshine and taking care of yard work and house maintenance. But the kids had been begging to go to Cashiers Sliding Rock, so after lunch we went out for some waterfall fun! The rocks at this small waterfall are so smooth that you can slide down them like a water slide. The water is cool and refreshing, and you'll find people of all ages enjoying the fun and relaxing in the sandy swimming area. It had been probably 25 years since the last time I slid down these rocks, so it was really cool to do it again with my family in tow!

We spent Day 5 on Lake Glenville! We rented a boat from Signal Ridge Marina, which is just 10 min from the cabin, and spent the afternoon cruising around the lake. We added a tube to our rental, which the kids absolutely loved. The lake has 4 waterfalls that flow into it, so we zipped over to a few to check them out. There are also several public islands on the lake, so we pulled up to let the kids run around and play in the sand. Boat day was a big hit with the entire family!

Day 4! We started the day at Highlands Aerial Park, where we did the Challenge Ropes Course. As a family of four, it was perfect! Enough fun for the older ones without being too scary or too challenging for the youngest one. They also offer full zip line tours, giant swings, and more for those who don’t have little ones in their group. After the ropes course we visited Glen Falls. A 1 mile hike downhill allowed us to view the 3 sections of Glen Falls, with a shallow, sandy swimming area at the bottom of the falls. The hike out is all uphill, but several observation platforms along the way offer the perfect spots to rest with views of the waterfall. Tonight we’re taking advantage of the fully stocked kitchen and the bbq grill to make a steak dinner. I think we’ll all sleep well tonight!

Day 3: hiking, a bit of rain, and dinner at a local pub! Today we had rain in the forecast, but we didn't let that stop us. We hiked Whiteside Mountain, which is about 10 minutes from the cabin. The hike is a 2.5 mile loop, with fantastic long range mountain views. It did rain on us a bit when we were on top of the mountain, but we stayed mostly dry once back under the thick tree canopy, and it certainly didn't spoil our hike. We came back to the cabin to do some chores, take naps, and play board games. Tonight we're off to dinner at Ugly Dog Public House-Cashiers. The Ugly Dog is a local staple, with locations in both Highlands and Cashiers, and serves great pub food, drinks, and frequently has live music. But first: it's time for a drink on the back porch!

Day 2 was all about fun! We took a day trip to the nearby town of Dillsboro (about 45 min from the cabin). We had bbq for lunch at Haywood Smokehouse - Dillsboro, which I highly recommend - be sure to arrive hungry! After that we went rafting on the Tuckasegee River ("the Tuck") with the Dillsboro River Company and had an absolute blast! You can opt for a guided trip, or just rent your own equipment like we did. Their entire staff was super nice, and our kids rated it a 10 out of 10! We're back at the cabin for a home cooked meal and s'mores at the fire pit. A perfect summer vacation day!

We've been looking forward to this all summer - it's finally our vacation week up at the cabin! I'm excited to share all of our fun over the next week! We arrived last night, so we started off our first day with a slow, lazy start to the morning before going to Zookeeper Bistro for brunch. Then it was off to The Village Green to wander the paths through the gardens and let the kids play on the awesome playground. We stopped at Town & Country General Store for ice cream on the way home. This evening we're packing drinks and a picnic dinner and heading to Highlands for Friday Night Live, a summer outdoor concert series put together by Visit Highlands NC. I'll continue posting throughout our week here so you can see some of the great options in this area to get ideas for your own vacation!
