Justin Thomas is a successful veteran drummer but hasn’t played much in the Latin styles. Here he is playing a 3-2 rumba clave in the Afro-Cuban style. Great job 👏 Justin.🥁
Blake is a student who’s only in the fifth grade. He was brave enough to sit in with veteran drummer Teddy Campbell and do some shedding. Blake kicked butt. 🥁
Julian is a Junior at The Baltimore School of Arts and was selected for the national Herbie Hancock Jazz scholarship program. We worked on some the tunes for next week’s tour. We also went into my cymbal collection to choose the best sounds for the tour. Congratulations and have fun soon to be superstar. 👏🥁
I always like working with young talent. Hudson really worked hard on this groove. 🥁👏
Julian Frazier is a junior at the Baltimore School For The Arts. Julian was picked to tour with the high school jazz group representing the Herbie Hancock institute for Jazz education. He is the first junior picked for the national award. We are preparing for his tour in two weeks. Next week we’re picking out some cymbals to use. 🙂
Today we were working on Afro Cuban grooves using left foot clave patterns. I’m really proud of Julian for being awarded this prestigious drum chair. 🥁
My former student and son John performed with Mallow Hill Saturday at the oyster festival. Nice pocket and groove 🥁
A sample virtual lesson with Justin. He was playing exercises in the Gary Chaffee Patterns publication. Justin’s goal is stroke technique with finger support and control. He also worked on Afro/Cuban grooves. 🥁
