Many of you have so kindly asked how you can help our little island recover from this devestating event. There are a number of organizations we can support if you are distant from Cedar Key. We will post them as we become aware of them. If you can help, that is wonderful, but if you cannot, knowing that you support our recovery is critical, so a like, love, hug or a share will go a very long way.

Here is the first we have seen so far and it’s for the resilient Prickly Palm. If Hannah has ever poured you a coffee or made you an açaí bowl, please consider even a small donation.

We know that this is a GoFundMe and that they charge between 14% and 17%. Because Seacoast bank is currently closed, we don’t have a lot of other options at the moment, but will update you as soon as we hear of a Venmo or Zelle direct option with no fees.

Thank you to everyone inquiring about Calypso. We are very sad to report that she did not survive Hurricane Helene. It was just too much for her and at least five other homes on 1st Street that are now gone or demolished.

We have no word yet on Blue Chair.

We love this island community and are just heartbroken. We will share more news as we receive it.

If you have a booking coming up, we may have an option for you at Key Lime. Please give us a bit of time to sort things out and Pelican Realty will be in touch once we know when the island will reopen and services are restored.

Cedar Key is Ready! Believe it or not, despite the storm, in less than three weeks the island is ready for visitors! This has been an incredible accomplishment for the island residents, owners, volunteers and businesses.

YES - The Seafood Festival is ON!

We have received many messages asking about the Cedar Key Cottages. Thank you for the care and concern expressed in your messages and I hope to be able to respond to everyone soon.

Well, we are starting to see some great progress here on the island! We at Cedar Key Cottages are happy to share that both Calypso and Key Lime are in great shape. Blue Chair, not so much.

The island is recovering. A second bar will open tomorrow night and the Island Hotel and Restaurant is serving for its third evening.

The boil water warnings have been lifted and while bottled water is still recommended for drinking and cooking, salinity levels in the water from the surge are falling.

If you previously had dates booked at Blue Chair, please reach out to Pelican to move your stay over to Key Lime or Calypso.

Key Lime had no damage and is ready for guests. Those who love her probably saw her in the background when Jim Cantore was filming during the storm. He even complimented the Sisters of Cedar Key houses for they way they weathered the storm. While saltwater surged beneath the house and between the pilings, Key Lime stayed high and dry with her 17.5’ concrete pilings, impact windows and hip roof, all prepared for hurricanes.

Calypso is all ready for a visit too! While you were watching Cantore’s Weather Channel reporting, you might have seen him pan over to the left and point out pretty gulf-front Calypso’s tin roof lifting.

Calypso is 98 years old this year and a section of Calypso’s 65 year old tin roof peeled back like someone had used a can opener on it. Johnny Martin Roofing got right to work and just five days after the storm, Calypso had a sparkling new roof - the first on the island. Calypso sustained saltwater flooding underneath the cottage, and some minor damage to her lattice, but we are very happy to share that there was NO flooding into the house! She’s getting new lattice and some new insulation under the cottage this week.

We are very sad to report that Blue Chair suffered the most damage of the cottages. With flooding throughout the house, she will require a respite but will return with refreshed finishes and some new decor.

Historic Calypso Cottage is Gulf front on 1st Street. It is a 2 bedroom, 1 bath cottage built in 1925 and lovingly restored with modern conveniences. (Please note that the 2nd full bedroom is accessed through the king bedroom.)

At the right time of year, you will see the Milky Way here at Calypso. Listen at night as the wind whispers and the waves lap at the rip rap along the banks. You can almost hear the ancient sailing ships with their halyards snapping against the mast as you might have in yesteryear.

Calypso is small dog friendly (up to 20 pounds) for an associated fee and offers a golf cart for rent.

Blue Chair Cottage is a lovely 2 bedroom, 2 bath cottage with a dock! Fish directly from the dock or access the open Gulf and Cedar Key's islands with white sand beaches. Nearly stepless, there are just two steps up to the house. Blue Chair is also small dog friendly (under $20 pounds) with an applicable pet fee. A golf cart is available for rent.

With its fully outfitted galley kitchen, the choice is yours to eat out at one of the fantastic Cedar Key restaurants, or grab a bag of clams and cook in!

One bedroom has a king, the other a queen and the two bedrooms share a bath.

Blue chair has lovely views of the canal and marsh across the canal where you will see ospreys, egrets, herons and other shore birds almost daily. In winter, we often get a wandering white pelican fishing in the tidal canal.

Kayaks are on property. There is a grill. The outdoor deck is expansive. NOTE: Blue Chair is on a canal with mangroves, so there are noseeums. We provide some repellant and mosquito coils, but come prepared! A Thermacell or two will work wonders to permit you to enjoy an evening outside. Did you know? Noseeums go to sleep by 9:00 to 10:00pm, so later evenings spent outside stargazing may be comfortable without being bitten.
