Welcome to Claycomb Chalets located in Champion, Pennsylvania and just minutes from Seven Springs and Hidden Valley in the heart of the Laurel Highlands.
Claycomb Chalets were built in the early eighties by renowned mason Jack William Claycomb Sr. Jack retired to Champion, Pennsylvania in his early forties after spending most of his life three hours northwest in Elyria, Ohio. After graduating high school Jack served in the National Guard and went on to become a mason apprentice. Jack worked in masonry while residing in Ohio and worked on projects at the local steel mills laying fire brick as well as many other structures including churches, schools and commercial buildings.
When Jack first arrived in Champion he built his first mountain chalet using the skills he learned as a mason and master craftsman. The first Chalet Jack built for himself is located about 3 miles from where Claycomb Chalets is located today. Jack’s “A-Frame” construction was built entirely out of locally-sourced timber and he spent several years refining his work on the Chalet.
Jack eventually sold his first Chalet in order to purchase the 5.3 acre parcel of land that is now known as Claycomb Chalets. He spent the next 10 years with the help of his oldest son Jack Jr. and long-time friends building another six mountain Chalets each the same in design. Like his first Chalet, Jack refined his all-log homes and added additions and lofts to each Chalet. For nearly 34 years Jack leased his Chalets to local mountain employees, ski patrol and long-time seasonal visitors. Jack lived on premises and his door was always open to friends, family and even a stray dog or cat on occasion.
Jack loved to ski, take nature hikes and was an active member of American Legion and volunteered his time to Amvets and the local VFW up until his passing in January 2013.
Today, Claycomb Chalets is owned and operated by Jack’s surviving children Jack Jr. and Julie Claycomb. In 2014 Jack and Julie had the idea of continuing their father’s legacy in the Laurel Highlands by opening up Claycomb Chalets to the public by offering short-term vacation rentals in their father’s one-of-a-kind Chalets.
