Our bouldering trip on Sunday was a success 🥳🥳🥳✅✅✅

These trips are a great way to get used to climbing outside…though it’s easy to spend more time practicing headstands on the crashpads than actually bouldering 😅

⚠️PARTICIPANT SPOTLIGHT ALERT⚠️

This semester, we will highlight participants and staff that make Carolina Adventures as awesome as it is :) First up: Leon Leuppert, an exchange student from Germany who went on FOUR expeditions with us last fall!

🧪 Last semester, Leon was on exchange from the University of Ulm in south Germany working on his masters in Business Chemistry.

🏕️ With Carolina Expeditions, Leon backpacked in Grayson Highlands and in Roan Mountain, kayaked down the Black River, and went caving in Tawney’s cave!

🚲 Leon is an avid biker. Because he didn’t have a car in the U.S., he relied on his bike (and Carolina Expeditions) to explore his surroundings!

🐴 He especially enjoyed Grayson Highlands because it was his first multiple day hike: “I really liked having all the stuff you need to survive for two days just on your back.”

🫖 On trips, Leon likes to be prepared with a thermos of hot tea. Though he enjoyed the food on trips, he wished that they’d packed more onions, notably stating that “every good meal starts with three big onions…”

🌟 While he is back in Europe this semester, Leon is inspired to adventure more back home, hoping to do some backpacking in the Swiss Alps 🏔️

🛞 Expeditions staff kicked off a semester full of exciting trips by learning how to change a van tire! Many of our staff meetings involve going over skills like these that are essential for staying safe in the field.

We Are Carolina Adventures.

A program within UNC Campus Recreation, Carolina Adventures includes 3 different program areas: the Challenge Course at the Outdoor Education Center (OEC), Expeditions and Climbing. We provide the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive challenge course complete with high and low course elements and a 1,200-foot zip line to UNC organizations, local school groups, youth groups, religious organizations, sports teams, and businesses. The Carolina Outdoor Education Center includes the Expeditions program which takes students on backpacking, kayaking and climbing trips year-round to allow students to learn while doing. Carolina Adventures also includes the indoor climbing walls at the various sport facilities. Our two climbing walls (Rams Head and Fetzer) offer around 5,000 square feet of climbing as well as a bouldering wall and cave. With highly trained climbing staff, the walls are safe and easy to access, even for those who have never climbed before.
