The sun is about to set on Goldpetal Farms for 2024 ...
I want to thank our visitors yesterday for participating in our fundraiser for the flood victims. I was disappointed in the turnout, the weather really cleared out around 4 p.m. and those who visited were treated with spectacular lighting and a top 5 evening to visit. It was awesome. And when we chose Wednesday for the fundraiser, the forecast was for clear weather....another forecast fail.
Those that did visit were very generous with donating and I'm very grateful to say we raised $398 for the folks of Eastern NC and Western TN. A donation of $200 was made to the United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County. Additionally, $200 was donated to Catholic Charities of Eastern Tennessee. Both Charities had dedicated accounts for flood relief from Hurricane Helene.
Thanks again for the support, and for folks that were worried about getting wet feet or freezy hair, here is what you missed!!!!
We are open!!! The sun is out and there are clouds to the west....perfect for pics!!!!
Hey folks! Sergeant Sunflower here.
Remember, special hours tonight to benefit the poor folks in TN and NC that were hit hard by flooding. I'm going to make a donation to a local charity helping with disaster relief for the total gross sales tonight. Come by and support them. Since this is a fundraiser, we are suspending all discounts so everyone 7 and up pays $15.
We have great flowers....and portrait mode on my camera phone is still removing important parts of a image. Here I captured a leaf caught in a spider web. Portrait mode removed the web....
Seeing more and more images of fake sunflowers online and they are getting better all the time. Charlatans and frauds!!!! Real beauty is what we have at Goldpetal Farms Maryland
Look at these beautiful sunflowers! Special opening tomorrow at 5 pm!
We open to fundraise for the flood victims on Wednesday from 5 until 730 pm. We have NEW, BEAUTIFUL, CUT FLOWER QUALITY Sunflowers opening daily. See you Wednesday!
I visited this winery about 6 years ago. They have links for organizations that are accepting donations for flood relief.
Seems like the folks in southern Appalachia are not getting much attention at the national level. It's sad. Parts of extreme southern Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and South Carolina had RECORD FLOODING AND DAMAGE.

Good night! Bee safe! Bee you soon!
Read this post for our special opening announcement!
So we are undecided about next weekend. We are leaning towards opening, but folks are really craving pumpkin spice, and we have summertime perfection.....
In the meantime, we are going to open Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. to benefit the flood damaged areas in Southern Appalachia. We are going to charge EVER visitor 7 years and up $15 (including members and photographers). Sunflowers will be $1 a stem or 7 stems for $5. Zinnias will be 50 cents each.
ALL money collected will be sent to help the relief effort for the region devastated by the remnants of Hurricane Helene. Though very different, Southern Maryland and those areas of Appalachia have some similar cultural history. Donations will be sent to Catholic Charities of East Tennessee or the Red Cross.
Again, this is a fundraiser and 100% of all proceeds will go to organizations helping those poor folks.
Last day for a great selection of Reds....LAST DAY. The remainder of our flowers are bicolor and yellows.
Pretty out there!!! The flowers have gotten themselves back together after that freak gust of wind Friday afternoon. The field is prettier than yesterday.
Such lovely flowers....
Come see our beautiful flower field today! Looks like the rain will NOT happen.
We will he exiting peak bloom after today in our field of reds. Your last chance to see our red field at its best.
OMG....DBGC!!!
LOL. Keep your pumpkin spice!!! Give me sweet, sweet sunflower sunsets at GPF!!!
Our majestic walnuts are just starting to turn....I'm seeing signs of fall...
Thanks to Wayne Williams for taking this picture last week. We've had a ton of Monarchs this year. And good to see adults still flying in the area.
The bulk of migration usually occurs over the next 2 weeks. Hoping they have waited to this point....hurricane season....yikes.
Keep the folks in Southern Appalachia in your prayers. They are dealing with a terrible situation.
Last weekend of 4 plus acres of peak bloom sunflowers. We will have about 1.5 acres of high quality, peak bloom sunflowers next weekend....if weather cooperates. We almost lost the 4 acre field yesterday afternoon and had some damage. I'd say don't take the chance, COME THIS WEEKEND!!!
Pretty morning in the sunflower field.
We have a combination of older flowers and whippersnappers just starting to bloom. Absolutely glorious! The wind did a small amount of damage.
It will again be important to pick YOUNG flowers. I'll have a display to show you as you come into the admissions barn to pay.
Look at this bee still working hard in 25 mph gusts!!!!
We have decided to close for the evening....
Good news first!
95 percent plus of our flowers are still ok. We lost some older flowers. Will the field be perfect tomorrow? I'd say, almost. It will be outstanding, much like last weekend....
Now the bad news....
We had a nasty gust of wind that removed the petals from the older red flowers. Very, very few flowers fell. If the gust had been preceeded by moderate or heavy rain, the field would have been gone. We dodged a gigantic bullet....
Broken umbrellas....someone named Sergeant Sunflower forgot to close them. We lost them both. Our banner at the entrance was torn off the fence...it was a nasty gust of wind.
The forecast is for decreasing wind, and the pictured storms are SUPPOSEDLY going to track east of the farm (see pic).
Say some prayers....90% chance tomorrow and Sunday are great days to visit!!!
PEAK BLOOM!!!
Fantastic weekend weather in the forecast!!! We are predicting our red sunflower field will be perfect this weekend. All picture from this morning.
Open this evening at 5 pm.. But if it's raining too much we may close a little early.
SATURDAY!!! 10 am until 8 pm. Perfect weather
SUNDAY!!! 10 am until 8 pm. Perfect weather.
Special offer for our members! Members only, 7 free sunflowers this week
I'm a little surprised this picture hasn't received more traction. There's no editing. Very much supports the fact that multiple genes exist for red coloration. For whatever reason this one petal had one less gene supporting red? Maybe.
IT'S STILL GETTING BETTER!!! CAN QUALITY HOLD UNTIL SATURDAY??? Top of peak bloom now through Saturday....UNLESS...fungal disease hits. I've seen beautiful fields destroyed in 48 hours.....the field is twice as good as last Sunday!!!
We have decided to open FRIDAY FROM 5 UNTIL 8.
Saturday, normal hours, 10 am until 8 pm.
GOOD NEWS! But let's keep this all in perspective. Quality is so hard to predict. Let's not count our blossoms until they bloom.
Saturday and Sunday are looking better for visiting. We will NOT open on Friday.
Ironically I think the moist weather is helping us some. Alternaria leaf spot loves moist conditions, but it needs cycles of wet to grow AND dry to sporulate. We have had no dry, so the disease can't spread!!! BTW, bacterial leaf spot does not need dry cycles to reproduce so if my theory is correct this also points to alternaria (laboratory test have shown both in our fields historically, but usually alternaria).
Check out these pics!!!

A true kaleidoscope of color.... come this weekend! Friday noon until 8 pm. Saturday 8 am until 8 pm. Sunday 10 am to 8 pm
Here's a short video by Avail Visuals of our sunflowers from a few days ago. Such a peaceful experience to visit. Notice how the percentage of bloom increased as the drone flight advances. Peak bloom at Goldpetal Farms is "a sight to behold" says one of our frequent visitors. Our visitors last night were awestruck!
Pretty amazing pollinator plant....let's make Devils Walking Stick cool again.....haha. I won't hold my breath.
Here is a rather poor quality video of the pipevine swallowtails chasing each other. I've been trying to capture this for some time since it's when flying like this they seem to display the prettiest color blue, looking like metallic blue confetti....or True Blue the Jeep....this is strictly coincidence...or a sign from above. Something else that makes Goldpetal Farms different. Is this part of a mating dance? Can any of you butterfly afficionados out there educate us on this apparently intentional dance???
The only X rated video you will see from Goldpetal Farms, unless the Chinese hack our account, viewer discretion is advised!!! We must have missed these in previous years...or the first brood has produced a second batch....
WE HAVE PIPEVINE CATERPILLARS!!!! Only the second time in our 10 year history (last time about 7 years ago). And I think an older adult as well. Sergeant Sunflower worked hard for this. He is happy!!!!
"Then all the colors will bleed into one". Not at Goldpetal Farms! We have no color bleed. Color is our craft. Colors are our specialty....
It was so cool watching this skipper sip nectar! Watch it raise its head after taking a sip! Good to the last drop!
We have the market cornered on nature. I'm not sure I've ever seen this many bees. It's a pollinator paradise!
We are are a seasonal operation bringing beautiful sunflower mazes and pick0-your-own flower fields in Maryland and Virginia.

When we opened our first maze in June of 2015, we dreamed of creating a beautiful and educational experience for all to enjoy. We think we’ve succeeded!
We are family owned and operated. Our mission is to blend agriculture, horticulture, ecology and the visual arts through our sunflower mazes. As a result, we’re creating memories, and that’s pretty cool.
We design all of our mazes as a truly interactive experience, with hands on and educational components. It’s about the flowers. It’s about the pollinators. It’s about the wildlife. It’s about the maze theme. It’s about the sunsets and fireflies. It’s about making smiles.
We try to treat all our guests with the upmost kindness and respect. We have a passion for help others, and are proud to be able to support our local charitable organizations.
Our mazes and cut-flower fields are filled with a variety of sunflowers and other nectar-producing flowers, and is a great location for photography, plein air painting and memory-making.
Goldpetal Farms is blessed to have an amazing staff of friends and family members, along with fans from near and far. We are thankful for you all!
