Historical Property Feature ✨ Dianna Brown's Place

If these walls could talk, they would tell you 62 Queen Street is deeply rooted in Charleston history. Diana Brown, an emancipated African American crossed the divides of race and class to become a successful businesswoman back in 1913.

The building at 62 Queen Street (Dianna Brown’s Antique Shop) was the first National Register of Historic Places listing in downtown Charleston to honor the diverse contribution of women and minorities.

It all started in 1884 when Jason and Dianna Brown began a stable business from what was later numbered 62 queen street. From raising 15 children, to operating a horse stable business, to opening an iconic antique shop - Dianna Brown's story and the history of 62 Queen Street is nothing short of extraordinary in any era. She navigated through divisions of race and class to carve out a niche for herself in Charleston’s burgeoning antiquities market. Brown was the first Black woman in the city to enter the antiques trade in 1913, working until her death in 1949. Despite major limitations placed on women of color in the early 20th century, Brown's antique shop thrived and she left behind an enduring legacy.
