Charleston is full of living history, and so much of that history can be read in its built environment. Downtown Charleston has been an epicenter of protests and demonstrations over the centuries, and today’s activists are literally walking in the footsteps of those who came before. This Saturday, join us on our walking tour through time and listen to the stories of the African American Community in Charleston, their tribulations and triumphs in the fight for Civil Rights. Gullah storyteller and Charleston native Fouché Sheppard shares her lived experiences, and we’ll look at the history of activism in the city to gain a deeper understanding of Charleston’s role in the justice journey of the South.

The Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, founded in 1816, has long been a pillar of faith, connection, and activism for the Charleston African American Community. Throughout its history, the congregation and community have been involved in the fights for freedom, for Civil Rights, and within the Black Lives Matter movement. It is often called “Mother Emanuel” for its position as the oldest AME church in the South.
On June 17, 2015, the church was brought to national attention when a white supremacist entered the church and joined a bible study, after which he opened fire on the attendees. The crime was explicitly motivated by racism and hatred. Survivor Polly Sheppard, whose 911 call was part of her chilling testimony, worked for years to advocate for the passing of a hate crimes bill in South Carolina, at the time one of only two states that did not have specific laws enhancing punishment for hate crimes.
On Saturday, January 25, join a journey through the Black History of Charleston as we retrace the paths and visit landmarks of generations past and present. Master storyteller and teacher Fouché Sheppard interweaves stories with wit and humor to engage her audience while spreading positive messages. As a native Charlestonian, she brings her rich experiences to the art of African-American storytelling and the keeping of history in African oral tradition. She and Tyler lead this in-depth walking tour from the Avery Research Center to the International African American Museum. Book your place at the 🔗 in bio.
We encourage everyone to continue to learn all aspects of this country’s history, including its darkest legacies, to better understand how something like this could happen. It is also important to gain greater understanding of and respect for our community, and to fight this racism and ideology wherever we see it, so that this may never happen again.

We are constantly reflecting on Charleston’s historic landscape, the good, the bad and the ugly. A rainy day is good for such things… These benches at Waterfront Park overlooking the Charleston Harbor and Fort Sumter are also a prime spot for such reflection.

December holds a lot of difficult anniversaries for the city-

Order of Secession was signed on Meeting Street on December 20th, 1860

General Anderson moved the Federal troops from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter on December 25th, 1860

The Great Fire burnt 540 acres of downtown Charleston on December 11th, 1861

These Civil War anniversaries remind us of the multitudes of Charleston and its role in shaping our nation. We always talk about how the balance of beauty and brutality is reflected in our built environment- that the old homes were built with the brutality of forced labor and the wealth derived from this labor and yet the buildings also reflect the beauty of the skilled craftsmanship of the forced laborers. The Civil War holds similarly difficult juxtapositions of being a time of great grief, more Americans died in the war than the rest of our wars combined to date, and more importantly it brought liberty to the vast majority of South Carolina’s population.

There is much to celebrate this time of year, including freedom, and much to reflect on. The annual Emancipation Day Parade will take place on January 1st starting at and ending at

We recommend Demons of Unrest by for a deep dive into what was happening in Charleston between the election of Lincoln in November 1860 and when the first shots were fired onto Fort Sumter in April 1861.

Fireworks or Shots Fired?! 🎆

Fireworks 🧨 on holidays and especially as a way to ring in the new year with a bang 💥 has been a tradition in many cultures since the introduction of gun powder 💣

We know this is not a newly popular tradition in Charleston in part because of this 1750 law ⚖️ “the firing and flinging of squibs, crackers, and other fireworks has of late so much prevailed in Charles Town as to endanger and annoy persons in passing the streets.” The local papers would generally remind the public of this law every December🗞️

Different cultures assign similar symbolism to the fireworks- that of cleansing the old year with fire and of warding off evil with the loud noises. The bright light is celebratory and welcomes in a fresh new year ✨
