Fourteen years ago we hired a marine who just came home from the middle east as a new civilian. This week we wished Tony Dimaiolo fair winds and following seas as he embarks on his new adventure. He was one of our two man Duck Doctor team. We'll miss seeing him daily but he doesn't have to be present for us to make fun of him. We love ya Tony.

The swim portion of Ironman Chattanooga has been canceled due to dangerous water levels.

09/27/2018

Wow. I've had close to 9" of rain in my backyard in three days. River is up and the current is crazy fast. The Ducks will be closed Thursday. Prayers to our neighbors in Soddy Daisy Tn who are suffering the effects of a terrible flash flood.

For you people that still read newspapers, we did an interview today with the Wall St. Journal. Should be printed in a few days. Basically, has the accident in Missouri affected business type questions. Also interviewed some of our passengers...

I want to thank all of our loyal fans who have posted their support. Since buying the company in 2008 my goal has been to make the Ducks as safe as possible. Because it is a small locally owned business and I am on site practically every day there is a tremendous attention to detail. Most of our crew has been with me from the beginning and the early days. There is a complete synchronicity between the Captains, the Mechanics, the Ticket staff and myself. Not much slips between the cracks. Because I was a captain before I owned it I have always looked at the business from the view point of the Captain, and that is that passenger safety and the safety of the vessel comes before anything else. Anyone who has been out in the ocean in bad weather knows that you cannot cut corners. I learned it best from Captain Anthony Clarke owner of the "Second Life" in Sausalito, with whom I was fortunate enough to sail with for several years, that you only buy the best equipment. You never want to trust your life to cheap gear. Everything has to be shipshape and maintained to the highest standard. I have followed that standard here at the Chattanooga Ducks. Our vessels are safe, reliable, clean, and well maintained. When you look at our ducks you can see how open they are. There is a reason for that. We have no sides or top in the back so that everyone can get out quickly and easily. That is one good reason we do not go in bad weather because it would be miserable. We go well beyond every Coast Guard requirement in the name of safety. All of our Captains are Ocean sailors and know what it is like to be out there with only yourself and your equipment to rely on.

All of us here are so saddened by this tragedy. Whenever something like this happens it is usually not just one thing but a combination of things. That is why our entire team focuses on each and every thing that could become part of that chain of events.

We hope you will continue to support us and pray for the people in Branson.

The accident in Branson on Thursday night was a terrible tragedy. Our prayers go out to all involved and especially those who lost loved ones.

At the Chattanooga Ducks passenger safety is our NUMBER ONE priority. Here is a statement to help clarify why the Chattanooga Ducks are safe.

This was a terrible accident. I have no information other than what has been reported in the news and the accident appears to be attributable to the weather.
The US Coast Guard classifies duck boats as Subchapter T boats, which are small passenger vessels. Of all subchapter T boats Duck boats have the best safety record in the class.
The Chattanooga Ducks are fortunate that we are in Chattanooga and on the Tennessee River, which is a very protected waterway. Ride the Ducks in Branson operates on an open lake. The Duck boats in Chattanooga are never any more than 50 yards from shore and never more than 100 yards from any bridge.
Not all duck boats are the same. We use original DUKW’s that were designed and built by GMC for the military to use in the D-Day invasion. The duck boats in many duck operations are not DUKW’s and are much larger and were purposefully built to replace the DUKW and carry more passengers.
We are very cautious of the weather and cancel trips that will be in jeopardy and even cancel trips that we think MIGHT be in jeopardy.
Occasionally we will get caught in a sudden pop up thunderstorm and the Captains are trained to seek shelter immediately under one the 4 bridges. Because of the accuracy of the weather apps, rain apps and high definition NOAA radar available on our phones this is a rare occurrence.
We are regulated by the US Coast Guard and all of our captains are highly trained and experienced licensed Masters.
Passenger safety is our NUMBER ONE priority.

July 4th week. If this weekend was a hint of what's to come, make your reservations NOW! Seats are selling out early each day. Wished we had more ducks....

River Drifters Bar & Grill isn't even open yet but last Thursday at least six customers strolled into the restaurant off Suck Creed Road hungry for dinner — many of them still in their swimsuits and fresh off the Tennessee River that flows across the road.

The Tennessee River is rock and rolling. TVA's predicted river flow for the next several days is above what we feel is safe to conduct tours. We will be closed at least until Monday...
