This is my favorite Jackson quote from his opinion in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, right before the famous “fixed star in our constitutional constellation” quote. It is such a beautifully written defense of the rights guaranteed by our First Amendment. I find these words particularly resonant now, where many people claim to embrace diversity of ideas, yet when it comes to significant issues, there seems to be no room for opinions that differ from the majority. Discussions on contentious issues have become so polarized that many genuine suggestions and concerns are quickly shut down.

We should allow space for others to voice their opinions and be prepared to defend our beliefs when they deviate from the norm.

It is with great sadness that we learned today of the passing of esteemed historian, narrator and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, David McCullough. Mr. McCullough had a long history at Chautauqua Institution. He spoke as part of the lecture series six times from 1986 to 1993, and a special program, “An Evening with David McCullough,” was held in the Amphitheater in 2009. His book Mornings on Horseback was a CLSC selection in 1982, and his 10th book, the New York Times best-seller The Wright Brothers, was a CLSC selection in 2016. He was lauded by critics as a literary master – his books bringing history to life for millions of readers – and his voice became unmistakably familiar when he narrated Ken Burns’s famous 1990 PBS documentary The Civil War. Regarding the Chautauqua experience, Mr. McCullough said, “There’s no place like it. No resort. No spa. It is at once a summer encampment and a small town, a college campus, an arts colony, a music festival, a religious retreat, and the village square. There’s no place—no place—with anything like its history.” Our sincere condolences go to Mr. McCullough’s family and all those who were inspired by his prolific legacy.
