The Mackinac Bridge is going dark at 10 pm!

Cheboygan is a premiere place for sky-watching. Our skies are so beautiful, we even have an International Dark Sky Park right in our back yard. Tonight, Sunday, August 4th, from 10-11 pm, the Dark Sky Park team and surrounding community-- including the Mackinac Bridge Authority-- are turning off non-essential lighting for the Headlands Lights Out Challenge.

They are asking ALL residents of Emmet, Cheboygan, and Mackinac Counties (and anyone else in Michigan) to participate by shielding, dimming, or turning off all non-essential lighting for one hour tonight as they take monthly measurements, in a show of solidarity and support for the dark sky preservation movement.

The Headlands folks will be sharing those readings, as well as video and images of the area and Mackinac Bridge going dark, on their social media pages.

The Milky Way, Aurora Borealis, and more are yours here in our area, thanks to the darkness of our skies. Stop by the library to borrow one of our Explore Cheboygan backpacks: our Headlands backpack is specially equipped for stargazing with red-light flashlight, binoculars, star charts, and more. And tonight, join the Dark Sky Challenge!

This picture, for me, is the kind I love so much when I'm out in nature. Yes the stunning sunset/sunrise pics are fun and exciting but it's these little ones that truly get me. The tiny little beauty we sometimes easily pass by. The simple beauty. In many ways in life, it's about the little things. This was taken right at the beginning of North Central Michigan College nature trail.
