The purchase of a high quality used bass boat takes many phone calls and 100's in gas when dealing with the general public or a used dealer.

Sites like Craigslist and Bass Boat Central offer great pictures and high hopes until you see the boat in person. Used dealers peddling poor trade in's, bank repossessions and auction house boats looking for a quick financial turn could care less about quality. Terms such as "Mint Condition" and "Like New" should be outlawed unless the person specializes in bass boats. Why do I know this, because

My buying standards immediately eliminate rebuilt power heads, mixed year motors, low compression, fiberglass and paint work, restoration projects, stress cracks, faded gel-coat, harness rewiring, recarpeting and all things suspect. Each bass boat sold receives personal attention to detail and is only passed to you after being elevated to high retail status, serviced by a licensed dealer and lake tested 2 twelve hour days. From bow to stern nothing is overlooked reassuring the boat is high quality, turn key and can hold up to the harshest conditions from the moment you purchase. What exactly does this mean to you? No sifting through the general public's junk. No financial risk on poorly fixed repossessions or auction boats from used dealers. No wasted time on the phone. No wasted gas or pointless trips. Most of us O’l timers know to stay put on Memorial Day weekend around Oklahoma and Arkansas. It seems God has a masterplan of cleansing the earth with floods and tornados on these 3 days for some reason.

For those wondering when the next boat will arrive…

Believe it or not, if I’m not on the water I’m sitting behind the laptop every day looking for boats. The market is flooded with overpriced boats right now. Several factors are in play.

The folks looking to sell and get into something newer can’t do so without compensating for the high interest rate on their next purchase. In other words, they are asking way above book value for what they have. I highly recommend everyone using NADA, now known as jdpower.com when looking for your next boat. NADA has been correct for 70 years, it won’t be incorrect tomorrow.

2nd factor is electronics. It’s a tough pill to swallow when you pay for something new, then have to ask half of what you paid because it’s a generation behind and used. Most folks don’t want to take that hit, so they tack on what they paid new to the price of the boat. Just a short time ago everyone had 5” screens and a $700 trolling motor, now folks are adding an additional $15,000 to $20,000 to the boat price to recover what they paid on electronics.

Other market factors are certainly involved in why it’s tough to find something nice right now, but that gives you an idea of where I’m at. I decided long ago NOT TO SELL JUNK and I’m sticking with it. That has more to do with my personality. My boats need to sell themselves because I’m no salesman. I’m trying like hell to bring the next unicorn home, but it’s taking a while.

2 YEARS OF WAITING IS OVER!
Just received my order of re-designed St.Croix Avid Series Freshwater Casting

The Avid Series Freshwater Casting was pulled from production 2 years ago for a re-design overhaul and is now back on the market. THIS IS BIG NEWS!! The Avid Series Freshwater Casting is considered the work horse of St.Croix bass fishermen including myself and makes up the bulk of my arsenal. This particular series has been the top seller for St.Croix for over 20 years, folks were plenty disturbed when it was discontinued.

The updates are quite impressive and, in my opinion, worth the wait. All new SCIII+ Carbon Fiber blank, micro guides, bait keeper on top instead of side, all-in-one foam, nylon and stainless-steel locking reel nut, more slender cork handle and an overall lighter weight than the older version.

I’m super stoked to get these babies rigged and on the water!!

Following Hank Cherry for the 2nd full day was an eye opener. Only a 2-time Bassmaster champ can fish without a care in the world with so much on the line. No sudden movements, no indecision, unspun and accepting the day. Hank was in fact so low key and laid back, he floated under everyone’s radar while sitting in 2nd most of the day and now 5th.

I, however, am a local boy with Christie roots. Hope everyone was listing when Christie laid down the gospel quote, “None of these boys have seen it blow 40mph on Grand before.” As much as we enjoyed following Hank, Christie will certainly have the home game advantage knowing where and what to do on the big gusty.

With the winds expected tomorrow, Zach and I will not be going out but wish Hank all the best. I think Hank and the camera man’s way of saying thanks for sticking by my side was more than awesome!

We did the deed today, back at it tomorrow. As expected, following Christie was, let’s say… nothing short of hazardous. We won’t be attempting that on Saturday I can assure you. Following Milliken wasn’t much better. When Christie and Milliken both hit West Bay at the same time…FUGETABOUTIT!!

We did hit the jackpot by picking up Hank Cherry early in the day and sticking with him. With a day one 7th place finish, we were the only boat following Hank. Awesome time following and getting into his mindset. Absolutely enjoyably!!

I don’t know what to say about the 2nd fire yesterday that finally burned Arrowhead to the ground other than…. Well, it sure smells fishy Joe.

Joe Harwood has known me since I was in diapers, our place was within walking distance from the original Arrowhead. He watched me grow up and back in the day personally served me the best fried chicken on Grand Lake every Friday night. Those of us who remember, know the original A frame building with 1 pool table. The members numbers now reach into the 10,000’s…. Our family number was 37.

I kinda feel a since of childhood history lost, but know all things must change. I always held respect for Joe, a man who built an empire out of 1 small A frame serving fried chicken. A man with a firm handshake, a smile and never forgot a name. It’s my hope he’s not wrapped up into something shady.

Nichols Tournament Series is now holding the 2024 May 19th 3rd season event at Eufaula.

After researching why, it seems the Nichols Marine Tournament Series organization has formed the Oklahoma Tournament Anglers Association, (OTAA). This organization is dedicated to fishing tournament facilities development in Oklahoma. (OTAA) https://otaa.homestead.com/

Although I applaud Don and Gary Nichols philanthropic stance, using 10’s if not 100’s of thousands for overdue project development in tournament facilities, the lower tournament payouts stick in my craw!!

At the risk of sounding crass, taking money out of anglers pockets to fund projects is NOT PHILANTHROPIC, it’s robbing Peter to pay Paul !!
