Good Morning Everyone! TOCLG himself here. We started takedowns yesterday a bit late due to an accident that has put yours truly out of commission for awhile. We did have a crew out yesterday but the next few days, Mother Nature has her own ideas with high winds and deadly cold. We promise we will get your lights down but please bear with me as I heal. St. Nick was more generous than jolly
You probably already knew that the idea of Santa Claus came from St. Nicholas. The saint wasn't really a bearded man who wore a red suit; that look came much later. In the fourth century, the Christian bishop gave away his large inheritance to the poor and rescued women from servitude. In Dutch, his name is Sinter Klaas, which later morphed into Santa Claus.

Gifts have both Christian and Pagan origins
Christians may have grown up learning that we give gifts at Christmas to mimic the presents the Three Wise Men brought the baby Jesus, but like so many other traditions, that also has its roots in Saturnalia. The pagans originally gave offerings to the gods too.

The confetti dropped in Times Square is holding secret messages.
The confetti in Times Square has thousands of people's wishes written on them. In 2015 "wishfetti" became a part of the tradition. People write their wishes for the new year and submit them to the Wish Wall in Times Square (or online) and those wishes are turned into the confetti that falls over the crowd at midnight.
