Hey y'all! Hope you're having a sublime summer so far. I sure am thanks to some great company joining me for many a wondrous walk across downtown Chicago. I want to say a big thank-you to everybody that came along for a walk with me in 2023. After 81 tours altogether we walked over 1,400 blocks across downtown Chicago! I had great company come along all the way from India to Indiana, Germany to Georgia, South Africa to Southern California and everywhere inbetween! Cheers to all of you and here's to a sure foot forward into 2024!

It's hard to believe that it's already April Fool's Eve and you know what that means... winter will be over in 6-8 weeks! I'm not foolin'! Chicago has had snow as late as May 25th!

Nonetheless I've been thinking it's time to come out of hibernation and hit the ground runnin'! Or walkin' anyway.

Here I stand before "Standing Beast" which won't be standing in place for long as it's moving down the street along with the rest of the State of Illinois offices vacating The Thompson Center. Why? Because this big downtown spaceship building has just been bought by Google for a cool $105mil and will become their new Midwest HQ! Lots of renovations ahead for the newly owned "People's Place" but at least Google won't but demolishing one of Chicago's great architectural oddities.

Have you ever walked around Chicago and thought "Frick... there's a lot of brick in dis town!" That's no coincidence. This used to be a city of splinters, where all that dead tree stuff was used for buildings, streets, sidewalks and everything else! Then this tinderbox went up in flames during the Great Fire of 1871, leaving a third of the populace homeless.

Soon thereafter it was decided that building with something less flammable was more practical and thus began the era of brick layer fever! At the time of the fire there were only 5 brickyards in town, within ten years that number grew to 60. By 1915, 1/10 of the world's bricks were being made in Chicago! WOW!

Now these back deck bricks behind me were laid about a hundred years ago during peak record breaking bricking building. Likely taken from the Chicago River clay that has imbued its colorful character across the city.

Never knew I could nerd out so much about bricks but I found all of this fascinating stuff from a quick search that led me to They give local neighborhood tours and if their website is any indication, I'd say they're more solid than the walls of a third little piggy home! I plan on checking out one of their tours this summer and suggest you do the same if fired clay walls are your thing.

As for WALKIN'W/COLIN tours, pending a medical professional opinion... I plan on giving it a go again by this time next week! In the meantime, if this isn't walkin' weather I don't know what is!? Go take a stroll!

Hey there gumshoes, I have an unfortunate announcement. Due to unforeseen medical circumstances (my appendix being an untimely prick) tours are on hiatus for a couple of weeks as I recover from surgery. But don't worry, I'm on the mend and plan to relaunch on July 7th!

In the meantime, I'll be doing less walkin' and a lot more readin' as I sponge up a bottomless well of Chicago knowledge. Here I have a whole square dedicated to the city, complete with a LEGO tower missing the antenna of what building? Give your guess in the comments!
