University Community Service Center (UChicago) We're the University Community Service Center at University of Chicago, engaging students with communities and partners to build a more just Chicago.
(17)

UCSC provides students with service opportunities that complement a rigorous academic experience. UCSC encourages students to explore Chicago, to make meaningful connections with diverse communities throughout the city, to develop friendships with other social-minded students, and to apply classroom learning to understand and address complex societal issues. UCSC offers different community service

options tailored to student interests: volunteer referral, student-run groups, campus-wide days of service, freshmen pre-orientation service week, community-building and social justice programs, tie-ins with course work, and internships at local organizations, including community non-profits, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies. UCSC's goal is to support students in becoming productive, thoughtful citizens and effective, inspiring leaders in their communities and professions.

This Juneteenth, the University Community Service Center (UCSC) is excited to engage and empower students to join the South Side in celebration and commemoration!

On Wednesday, June 14, 6:30 -8 p.m., the UCSC presents “Intentional Immersion,” a workshop experience designed to offer context and guidance on thoughtful community engagement in relation to Juneteenth celebrations. We’ll look at the history of the Juneteenth holiday and its place in Black life on the South Side of Chicago, then talk about and practice community engagement skills that can power your participation as a volunteer or attendee at one or more of three UCSC-supported community events on Saturday, June 17 and Monday, June 19.

Learn about the significance of Juneteenth featuring UChicago’s very own Dr. Julie Saville. Also consider taking part in the many activities happening around the city today!

“More than an official pronouncement by the state, emancipation reflects the cumulative impact of the “war within the war” fought by people in bo***ge, Saville said. The notion that a proclamation by a Union officer was sufficient to abolish slavery overshadows the efforts of others: the 750,000 enslaved men, women, and children who successfully escaped to federal territory or died in their attempts; the enslaved people who surreptitiously mounted work stoppages and slowdowns behind Confederate lines; or the nearly 200,000 African American soldiers who served in the Union Army.”

What Juneteenth tells us about the history of emancipation
