All people who call Illinois home—in every part of the state and of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds—will have the opportunity to see themselves in the complex history of the nation’s 250th anniversary and to imagine together the future for Illinois we want to transpire over the next 250 years.

The Illinois America 250 Commission has identified four priorities that will ensure all Illinoisans can commemorate this anniversary in their own unique way:
• Engaging Youth
• Promoting Local Commemorations
• Uplifting Local Stories and Places
• Recognizing Service

At IL250.org, individuals and organizations can sign up to become a promotional partner, establish an IL250 community, submit events to the local and national calendar, and access resources. Stay tuned for more information and program announcements from Illinois Humanities.

Reposting Opportunity for Native Performing Artists:
2026 Native Performing Arts Fellowship Application
Ends on Wed, Jul 16, 2025, at 6pm MST

Grant amount: $10,000
Fellowship window: January 1, 2026 - December 31, 2026.

The Native Performing Arts (NPA) Fellowship is a year-long program that helps Native Artists create, practice and perform within the Performing Arts (theater, music, dance, live performance, etc.). The program provides them with network-building, professional development training and funding to work toward building a sustainable career within the Performing Arts landscape.

The NPA Fellowship offers a one-year $10,000 grant to Native performing artists. The program's purpose is to develop independent, satisfied, and credible Native performing artists, who are generous in spirit and dedicated to cultivating ways that grow their artistic knowledge and skills within their performance craft. Applications are open to Native performing artists at all stages of their career.

The NPA Fellowship is not a project based grant. Proposed budgets should be grounded in needs to further artistic growth or/and achieve artistic career goals rather than providing financial support toward a new or existing creative project. Developing or completing a solo creative project can be a component of your proposal, but should not be the primary goal or outcome of your fellowship year.

The IAC Muse Newsletter
Illinois Artist Spotlight: Scott Wolniak, FY25 Creative Accelerator Grant Recipient

Scott Wolniak, is a multidisciplinary artist, educator and occasional curator. The primary focus of his work is the creation of experimental pattern-based paintings. Since 2018, Wolniak has been developing a methodology for creating paintings at wide-ranging scales through layers of abstract drawing, additive textures, color staining, and rhythmic mark-making. Based on motifs of the natural world, as well as tropes of consciousness, the paintings are intended to function as immersive energy fields that invite slow looking. He is represented by Goldfinch Gallery, with whom he has had three solo exhibitions since 2020.

Since the mid-90's, Scott has been active in the Chicago art scene, consistently exhibiting as well as organizing and curating shows. He ran the influential alternative project space, Suitable, in his Humboldt Park garage between 1999 and 2004 and has recently curated shows at the Hyde Park Art Center and the Logan Center for the Arts. His work belongs to numerous permanent collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Cleve Carney Art Museum. He has been teaching in the University of Chicago’s Department of Visual Arts since 2007 and is currently working on a book about the practice and philosophy of drawing.

Says Scott, "Receiving the Creative Accelerator award means so much to me—as an affirmation of my many years making work and for the financial freedom it provides for new and ongoing projects. Immediately, this supports my practice with supplies and studio rent. It also gives me the ability to embark on a couple of long-term back-burner projects, including a video piece and a drawing book. I’m incredibly grateful for the recognition and financial support from the Illinois Arts Council, especially at this time when so many funding streams are being cut."
