Back in 1962, the idea of dyeing the Chicago River green was born, thanks to plumber Stephen Bailey's innovative suggestion. This idea was initially sparked to detect illegal sewage dumping but quickly transformed into a beloved St. Patrick's Day celebration. The first dyeing took place on March 17th, 1962, when 100 pounds of fluorescein dye were poured into the river, creating an awe-inspiring green spectacle.

Fast forward to today, and it has become a cherished tradition, drawing thousands of spectators to witness the magical transformation of the river. The dye used nowadays is eco-friendly and safe for the environment, so you can enjoy the festivities worry-free!

But how long does the river stay green? 🤔 Typically, the vibrant hue lasts for about 5 hours, giving locals and visitors alike plenty of time to revel in the St. Paddy's Day spirit. It's a sight to behold and a reminder of the lively Irish culture woven into the fabric of our city.
