Germany - Airport Staff Threaten to Strike at Frankfurt Airport

Leaders of umbrella labor union Ver.di announced that a nationwide rolling public sector strike will affect workers at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) on March 27. Although the extent of member participation is unclear, expect severe flight delays and cancellations on passenger and cargo routes, particularly if airport security personnel walk off the job. Airlines could begin canceling domestic and continental European flights beginning late March 26 or once the extent of the strike is clear.

iJET Analysis: FRA is the third busiest in Europe for passenger flights; if not averted, the strike could lead to cascading disruptions at other European hubs, as aircraft are unable to operate onward flights. Similar industrial actions have led to hundreds of flight cancellations and severe delays. Union leaders announced the walkout as part of an ongoing effort to escalate pressure ahead of renewed government negotiations. A third round of labor talks will begin March 31; further strikes may be announced if government and union representatives once again fail to come to an agreement.
