Our thoughts are with the Tillotson family during this difficult time.
🕊️ In Loving Memory of James K. Tillotson 🕊️
Our hearts are heavy as we say farewell to a true pillar of the Chicopee community, James K. Tillotson, who passed away on November 18, 2023, at the age of 88, after bravely battling cancer for two years. Surrounded by his loving family, he peacefully embarked on his eternal journey from the comfort of his home.
Jim's roots ran deep in Chicopee, as he was born on July 6, 1935, in Springfield to John and Rosanna (Lee) Tillotson. Throughout his remarkable life, he dedicated himself to serving our beloved city in various roles, leaving an indelible mark on its direction.
Jim's civic contributions were extensive and diverse. He recently served as a Chicopee City Councilor-at-Large and had previously held the positions of Ward 1 City Councilor and Ward 1 member of the Board of Aldermen, the predecessor to our Council. His commitment to education was equally profound, spanning over five decades. Starting as a teacher at Lambert Lavoie Elementary School, he later taught Social Studies at Chicopee High School and even took on the role of Hockey Coach, following his tenure as Assistant Hockey Coach under Pete Clarke. He continued his educational journey by teaching at the High School of Commerce in Springfield and eventually becoming the Director of Social Studies K-12.
Jim's dedication to learning extended to his own academic achievements, including his graduation from Classical High School in Springfield, earning a B.A. in Economics from American International College, and obtaining an M.A. in Education from Springfield College. His thirst for knowledge led him to achieve a Sixth Level education, surpassing 30 hours beyond his Master's Degree.
As a proud veteran, Jim served in the Air National Guard during the Berlin Crisis, stationed in Phalsbourg, France. His unwavering commitment to community and country was evident through his active involvement in the American Legion and the Elks.
Jim's legacy lives on through his loving family, including his devoted wife Joan (Cavanaugh) Tillotson and their four children and their families. His children, James M. Tillotson and his wife Susan, Mary Spencer and her sons Collen and Evan, Karen Pons and Dustin Pons and their children Maggie, Oliver, Lilly, and Davis, and Matthew Tillotson, all hold a special place in his heart. Jim cherished moments spent with his nine grandchildren and their families.
In remembrance of Jim, we kindly ask that you consider making a gift of masses, especially from his home parish of St. Rose de Lima (15 Chapel Street office), St. Stanislaus Basilica (40 Cyman Drive office), where he faithfully attended noon Mass on Fridays, the Divine Mercy Shrine in Stockbridge, MA, or any other source of Masses, in lieu of flowers.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 24, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Grise Funeral Home, 280 Springfield St, Chicopee. The Rite of Christian Burial Mass will be held on Saturday, November 25, at 11:00 AM at St Rose de Lima Church, with burial at Calvary Cemetery.
Jim Tillotson's legacy of service and love will forever be etched in the heart of our community. Rest in peace, dear friend. 🙏❤️
